Principal’s Report

Teachers have begun the reporting process and the upcoming mid-year reports are designed to give parents a comprehensive overview of how their child is progressing in each subject that they study. At Exeter High, we follow the Education Department’s policy in relation to report writing and collection. The department states ‘This report should be given to parents at either a three-way (teacher parent–student), or a two-way (parent-teacher) interview’. In exceptional circumstances, the report may be sent home and a telephone interview arranged. These interviews are an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and look at ways to address any concerns that may be raised in the report.

Last week saw the annual NAPLAN testing take place and I was very impressed with the way our Grade 7 and 9 students applied themselves to the tests over the week. When the school receives the results, I will share these in a future newsletter. Parents will also receive their child’s results in the mail in the coming months.

The term 2 school social was a huge success last Thursday night with over 125 students attending. Once again, our students excelled in the costumes they wore with the theme of Iconic Duos and the behaviour of all who attended was outstanding. I would also like to thank our staff who attended as we could not hold such events without their support.

As I have discussed in previous newsletters, attendance at school is essential if students are going to be given the best possible opportunity to succeed – both at school and beyond in later years. The middle two terms can always be a challenge with illness but can I please ask parents to notify the school office if your child is away with sickness so that our attendance records can be marked appropriately.

2018 Grade 7 Camp

On Wednesday 2nd May, the grade 7 team set off for a big three day camp at Camp Banksia, Port Sorell. The grade 7’s participated in a wide range of activities for the 3 days focussing on team building.

On the first day, the bus stopped before the camp (approx. 4 km) and we walked along the foreshore in Port Sorell, then onto the beach and into camp. Once we arrived, we were divided up into tribes of approximately 14 students with two grade 10 Student Advisors/SLC members. We were given coloured bandanas so that we could easily recognise which team everyone belonged to. We were warned that if we didn’t have our bandanas with us at all times, we would receive a physical exercise consequence. Our first round of activities in our tribe was down on the beach. These ranged from sand sculptures, iron person, tug of war, beach flags and handstand competitions. By this time we were starving, so we headed off to lunch where we were fed incredibly yummy food (which was the same standard for all the other meals – so much food!). After dinner, we had Miss Camp Banksia where each cabin had to make a fashion outfit out of newspaper, a garbage bag, sticky tape and any other items from our cabin. Everybody had one hour to construct their outfit and then parade down the runway to the judges. We think that the best dressed was Mr Lendvay!

On the second day, we made up names for our tribes and developed a chant and dance to be performed at regular times throughout the camp. The names of the tribes were The Red Roosters (red), Pink Panthers (pink), Too Blue and a Few (blue), The Purple Ninjas (purple) and finally the yellow team The Sun Warriors, which Mrs Parish and Mr Lendvay sometimes referred to them as the Sun Warmers. Again, we spent the day doing many team building activities. Most students seemed to enjoy the basketball the most. After a long, fun and exhausting day, we watched a movie as a grade.

On our third and final day, we went to the gym and played a lot of games as an entire grade 7 team. We had to compete against one another again with our tribal chants and dances including spelling our team names out with our bodies.

All in all, this was an amazing camp where we learnt a lot about each other and formed new friends.

2018 Launceston Drama Competition

The Launceston Speech and Drama Competitions is a well-regarded competition that has been operating continuously now for 111 years. Students ranging from junior primary through to year 12 have the opportunity to showcase their talent over the course of a week, in a variety of drama disciplines. Last week saw grade 8 and 10 Exeter Drama students competing in both the Senior Creative Drama and Senior Individual Creative program sections. Students had a time limit of 5 minutes in the Creative Group and 3 minutes in the Creative Individual program to explore a theme through a variety of drama and other Art forms ranging from: scripted pieces, vocal work, prose/poetry, mime, movement, singing etc. Both these sections focus on performance skills, timing, stage-craft and in the Creative Group, the ability to work as a cohesive team.

The 9/10 Creative Individual program saw Elizabeth Rogers gaining 3rd place with 87 points and Rebecca Hyatt gaining a Highly Commended with 86 points. The adjudicator complimented the girls on their energetic performances, well developed characters, clear, articulate voices that were well projected; and excellent use of staging.

In the Senior Creative Group section of the Launceston Drama Competitions Exeter gained 89 points in a very competitive class. The group consisted of Elizabeth Rogers and Rebecca Hyatt along with Grade 8’s: Rachel Dickson, Carrie Jetson, Elise Young, Ella Greenhalf, Nikita Hockey and Layla Preston Ogier. The adjudicator was impressed with the involvement of all group members, their use of performance space, facial expression and body language, the creative use of slapstick for the movement piece, and excellent timing.

These places and scores could not have been achieved without everyone’s dedication and immense commitment, working many lunchtimes on top of joining each other’s drama classes. Well done to all those involved.
