PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As we come to the end of an extremely busy but very successful term, I want to take a moment to reflect on our students' achievements across various fields. This term has been notable for the many successes our students have achieved in sport, science, engineering, and competitions. I have been truly impressed by how our students have remained engaged in their learning right up until the end of the term. Their dedication and hard work are commendable and certainly contribute to our school's vibrant learning environment. It was nothing short of amazing to see so many students receive awards during the end-of-term grade celebration assemblies. Recognising their hard work and achievements is a highlight of our term, and I want to congratulate each and every one of our award recipients. Additionally, it was fantastic to see so many parents attending the celebration assemblies and the recent parent-teacher meetings. Your involvement and support are invaluable to our students’ success, and foster a stronger school community. As we head into the holiday season, I hope everyone takes the time to relax and recharge. I look forward to sharing more updates about the exciting developments at Exeter High School next term. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday!

2025 REDEVELOPMENT PHOTO UPDATE – END OF TERM 2

YEAR 8 SCIENCE
As part of their Biology unit, our Year 8 students have been learning about the structure and function of each organ involved in digestion. To support their understanding, students had the opportunity to perform a rat dissection, carried out respectfully and under close teacher supervision. This optional, hands-on experience gave students a closer look at how body systems work – a powerful way to bring science off the page and into real life!

RATION DAY CHALLENGE

Last week, the Interact Club proudly hosted Ration Day, a meaningful initiative to support those experiencing famine in Jordan. We collected non-perishable food items to send overseas, and the response was incredible. A special congratulations goes to 9B, who led the way with an outstanding 75 items donated! Thank you to everyone who contributed – your generosity is making a real difference. Stay tuned for updates as we prepare to deliver the donations to Jordan. Also, keep an eye out for our next collection drive leading up to Christmas, where we’ll be supporting families in need within our own community.

AUTO STUDENTS IN ACTION

INTERACT CLUB
Recently, the members of our Interact Club were presented with their leadership badges. Attending the ceremony were representatives from our local Rotary Club, who continue to support our efforts, and the Rotary District Governor. The Interact Club continues to work hard on community projects both inside our school and further abroad. Congratulations everyone!

YEAR 8 ENGLISH
This term, our Year 8 students have been exploring film techniques and how they are used to portray characters as good or evil, using Danny DeVito’s 1996 adaptation of Matilda as their focus text. Over the past few weeks, students have been analysing key scenes, identifying cinematic techniques, and drafting analytical paragraphs in preparation for an in-class essay.
This week, they brought their learning together by completing their essays with great success. To celebrate the end of the unit, students also headed to the kitchens to bake a chocolate cake – inspired by Ms Trunchbull’s iconic cake from the film – as a sweet way to finish off the term!

TRIBUTE TO DAPHNE

Daphne Mitchell passed away late last week at 76 years old. Just over a fortnight before, she was visiting us at Exeter High School, generously offering a staff morning tea to celebrate Chaplaincy Week, then helping serve toasties at our Food Club. She was comfortable in the school setting, having been a teacher as well as working in catering amongst the many things she’d done in her work life.
Despite retirement, she was busy serving at the local Uniting Church in many roles, including as treasurer and representative for Chaplaincy. “She was the heart and soul of that committee: the cheer squad behind Chaplaincy,” Crystal Parry (former Exeter High School Chaplain) rightly shares. Daphne was indeed one of the first people I met when I began in the role in 2022. She sought me out with great joy that a new chaplain had been found; encouraged me with a reminder of the importance of the role; and welcomed me into the long legacy of chaplaincy at the school – a legacy that Daphne had helped form. Before the government offered funding, Daphne was instrumental in setting up the donated funds to cover the support role across multiple days, encouraging friends to rethink their weekly coffees and instead support the cause. Paul Burton, another former SU Chaplain, described her as “such a passionate supporter of Chaplaincy”, appreciating her support personally when he was at Exeter and adding “she will be missed”. Indeed, she will. This sentiment is one everyone who knows her impact shares when they hear the sad news of this loss.
On behalf of Scripture Union and the Exeter High School community past and present, thank you Daphne.

SU Chaplain
