PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Our Year 9 and 10 students attended a Life Choices presentation yesterday, where the focus was on making courageous decisions and challenging young people to think for themselves and consider the impact that choices have on themselves and those around them. We always endeavour to host such presentations here, as we believe that these messages are important and are aligned to the everyday core values that we follow at Exeter High School: Respect, Maturity, Acceptance and Learning.

Many of our students have excelled in various sporting events over the past few weeks. Our athletics team represented our school with pride at the recent inter-high carnival, where we finished fifth overall in Division 1. There were several outstanding performances in trying conditions, in particular the record-breaking efforts of Cammi Thomas in the Year 7 Girls 100m, long jump, triple jump and high jump along with Avery Thomas in the Year 10 Boys discus. We also had a number of students selected to participate in the Intra State Athletics Carnival last Friday. This is another example of the immense talent we have here at Exeter High School.

We held our annual Cross Country this afternoon and, once again, the participation and behaviour across the grades was outstanding. There were some excellent performances and Mr Stewart will detail these in the near future through our Facebook page.

As the cold weather is well and truly upon us, I would like to remind our parents that we are able to support families in the purchasing of uniform items where necessary. Hoodies are not a part of our uniform and must not be worn under uniforms. We have a range of warm items available to students and these can be purchased through our school administration team.

We have a large number of Year 9/10 students who are undertaking work placements this year across a variety of industries. These placements are invaluable to our students in gaining an insight into what it would be like to work in sectors such as building, childcare or hospitality. One aspect that students do need to consider, though, is that if they undertake a work placement, they must be willing to commit to the entirety of the sessions, which are detailed before the placement commences. Students must also be comfortable that they can catch up on any schoolwork missed on the days they are away from school in the workplace.

Principal

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEAR 7 ENGLISH?

In English, Year 7 students are very busy completing their Spirited Away assignments. Earlier this term, they watched Spirited Away, an animated feature film in which the protagonist, 10-year-old Chihiro, develops the courage and perseverance needed to rescue herself and her parents from the witch Yubaba. The assignment includes three components:

  • Describe how each of the stages of the Hero’s Journey is expressed in Spirited Away
  • Discuss how Chihiro is transformed by her adventure
  • Identify lessons from the film that might inform your attitude and achievement in English

For many students, it’s the first time they’ve prepared a comprehensive response to a text. They’re doing a great job, writing detailed assignments of 1000+ words. Next term, Year 7 students will study Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. We look forward to sharing their learning with you.

MOUNTAIN BIKING REPORT

On Friday May 5th, on a very rainy day, a dedicated band of professional mountain bikers ventured to the Trevallyn nature reserve to compete in the All-Schools State Mountain Bike competition. Year 10 student Samuel Stocker, Year 9 students Jack Porteus and Abe Kemsley, alongside Year 7 student Cruze Wells, were outstanding in their age group events. To kick off the day, Cruze made an awesome effort racing in the U15’s cross country event, while Jack, Sam and Abe peddled over to the timed-downhill enduro stage. Later in the day, the older boys raced their cross-country circuit, with Cruze taking his turn to fly down the enduro. With a few mechanical difficulties and Cruze borrowing Mr Lendvay’s bike after his dropper post malfunctioned, heaps of muddy bikes, splatter, and lots of laughs filled with enjoyment, we all had a joyful day. Thanks to Mr Clarke and Mr Lendvay for organising the day, and we are already looking forward to competing again next year. It is a great opportunity for students to enter a race and gain experience at a state level.
