PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
We are already well and truly into Term 2 and I am pleased to say, it really feels like things are very close to being back to normal within the setting of Exeter High School. Our attendance rates are steady and the number of staff and students absent from school through Covid-19 are very low, allowing us to go about our core business of teaching and learning in a largely uninterrupted manner. I would especially like to thank our administration team (led by Mrs Mandy Doyle), of Chris Fialho, Tania Williams and Kathy Liddell for their outstanding work throughout the Covid-19 times, taking parent calls and keeping everyone informed.
The school cross country was held on Monday afternoon and once again, our Exeter High students shone with their performances. A big thank you to Mrs Robinson and Mr Stewart for organising the event. Thank you also to the West Tamar Rotary club for cooking a BBQ for our school – it is this type of community partnership that helps make this school such an amazing place to work. The Inter-High cross country is on next Tuesday at Scotch Oakburn Park and permission letters have gone home with students who will be attending this event. We have also been advised that parents can attend to spectate which is great news.
One change to the Covid-19 rules in schools is in relation to attendance. Students can only be marked as Explained Absence due to Covid-19 if they have tested positive. VLC will continue supporting students learning from home due to Covid-19, however, students who have been learning from home up until now are expected to return to school for their education. Mask rules for school remain as they were in Term 1 and I will inform you if these change.
The Education Department’s policy in relation to reporting has also changed for 2022. We will be offering parents/carers the opportunity to have a 3-way conversation at the end of each term with parent/teacher nights now being held four times a year. Core subjects will also now be assessed using a 9-point scale whilst Option subjects will still receive an A-E rating. We have included information from the Education Department regarding these changes below and teachers will be able to talk to parents/carers and students through these changes during the 3-way conversations.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEAR 7 ENGLISH?
In the last weeks of Term 1, Year 7 students learnt about aspects of visual texts (colour symbolism, angles, and framing) and applied this learning to the creation of comic strips. Students were asked to select a pre-prepared scenario, or develop one of their own, and present this scenario as a 6-10 frame comic strip, ensuring they applied colour, angles and framing purposefully. Students enjoyed the task and produced some excellent work, some of which is pictured below. More recently, students have begun studying Spirited Away, an animated feature film in which the protagonist, 10-year-old Chihiro, must develop the courage and perseverance needed to rescue herself and her parents from the witch Yubaba. Spirited Away is a Hero’s Journey and, in readiness for watching the film, students learnt about the stages of this narrative pattern. After watching Spirited Away, students will write an essay about the film. We’ll share their work with you at the end of Term 2.
