PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
This term has certainly flown by but, as always, we have so much to be proud of and to celebrate here at Exeter High School. Last Thursday and Friday saw our school undertake an External Review, where educational leaders came into the school to observe and interview the community. The purpose of these interviews is to provide feedback on how the school is travelling in an educational sense, as well as in relation to how connected and supported the school community feels. The feedback we received was outstanding from staff, parents, and students. Staff reported feeling highly connected to the school, which was highlighted by an incredibly low staff turnover.
Relationships between home and school are strong and students have an obvious sense of belonging. One of our foci for the future will be to ensure we continue to create a culture of inquiry and innovation, where independent learning and student voice is valued.
In relation to Covid-19, schools will be operating in Term 2 as they have been so far this year. As always, if your child is unwell, they must stay home and test using a Rapid Antigen Test. We have a supply of the tests here at school should students need any. If your child is a close contact or tests positive, please notify the school so that we can adjust their attendance accordingly and organise schoolwork for them.
Term 2 always sees a change in the weather and temperature. We have a range of winter uniform options here for both boys and girls and, as always, if families are seeking financial support with uniform, we are always able to discuss options to support your child.
Before concluding, I would like to acknowledge those students who were recognised in grade assemblies this week for receiving a pleasing Interim Report. At Exeter High School, we value application to learning and efforts to be our best. It was terrific to see that so many of our students have made a wonderful start to the 2022 school year, as recognised by their receipt of a certificate for an outstanding, excellent or highly commendable Interim Report. I congratulate the following students and encourage all others to aspire to their example:

Finally, have a safe and relaxing holiday and thank you to our entire school community for making what could have been a stressful term, very much a normal 10 weeks of teaching and learning. This doesn’t just happen, and it reflects the amazing community spirit and culture we have worked tirelessly to develop.

YEAR 8 VIKING WEEK Exhibition
In Year 8 HASS, students have been immersed in a depth study of The Vikings. As part of their learning, students worked in pairs or groups of three to create a model of either a Viking dragon ship, a Viking longhouse or a Viking village in Minecraft. In addition to their models, students were required to produce annotations and research information to respond to a question as further demonstration of their knowledge and understanding.

All the Vikings models are currently on display in our school library and they look amazing. The students thoroughly enjoyed ‘Viking Week’ and have made some important connections in relation to the Viking’s incredible skills in ship building and navigation and insights into the Viking way of life. This learning will assist students in writing a persuasive discussion essay in Term 2.

YEAR 12 AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS
As part of the requirement of Agricultural Systems, students are to experience the finer details of how to run an agricultural enterprise. Earlier this year, Elise, Sarah and Amy had a delightful visit to Lone Goose Farm who farm Muscovy Ducks for the table as well as meat chickens, poddy calves and avocados. We also spent a very informative afternoon with Josh Wing, agronomist for Harvest Moon, who showed us around the farm talking to us about the large number of variables to consider when farming vegetable products. Steve Ives, who is an Agribusiness lecturer from the University of Tasmania, gave a great talk to our students plus six visiting students from Launceston Church Grammar School about how soils effects land use.

GRADE 7 STEM
In grade 7 STEM, each lesson students are presented with a physics-based problem they must solve. This means the students have to design, construct, then test their devices to see if they were successful in solving the problem. In the photos, students are testing the weight capacity of towers made from a limited supply of paper, straws and tape while on a shaking machine to simulate an earthquake. Other photos show the result of students designing and building a toy or game that has at least one moving part. Other projects have included making a boat out of aluminium foil, balancing a hammer off the edge of a table, testing turbine designs plus making and testing a water rocket.
