PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As we commence Term 4, I would like to remind everyone of the importance of students attending school each and every day of this term to ensure they are equipped with the lessons and skills they will need for the following year. Every day missed creates a missed opportunity for your child as the work covered in classes is designed to not only teach new skills and concepts, but also create the foundations for the work covered in the following year. Please ensure your children are at school every day and if there is a genuine reason for an absence, contact the school office to let us know. Any students who are absent for prolonged periods of time without an explained reason, will have letters of absence sent home this term. We also need to continue to work together as a whole school community to ensure that students make the most of the remainder of term 4.

Yesterday afternoon saw our final Radio Show for 2021 and our hosts were Isaac Leslie and Raphael Debrito who spent the show looking at ‘things that tick you off, those minor inconveniences that can ruin your day and on the flip-side, those things that are satisfying or give you a rush of relief’. Both boys did an outstanding job and should be congratulated for the show. Also, a massive thank you to Mrs Parish for organising this opportunity for our students throughout the year.

Our Year 10 students will be finalising their transitions for 2022 in the coming weeks and I encourage parents to be a part of this process to ensure the avenue your child chooses for next year is the one best suited to their future desired pathways, whether it be continued study at one of the colleges or other educational Grade 11 opportunities now on offer across the Northern region or in a working capacity. Please contact the school should you have any questions in relation to this.

ROTARY YOUTH DRIVER AWARENESS

On Wednesday,13th October 2021, the Grade 10’s attended RYDA at Symmons Plains. During the day students attended six different sessions. The first was ‘road choices’ which was led by Senior Constable Annabelle Shegog on key risk areas for young drivers and passengers. The second was ‘I’ in drive, in this session we learnt about how personality is an important aspect of the total road safety equation. The third session was, ‘Speed and stopping’ - during this we got to experience the relationship between speed and stopping distance through practical observation. ‘Mind Matters’ was the fourth session where we explored mind state as a road safety risk factor. Session five was ‘Drive S.O.S’ and was for students to look at the road from the perspective of other road users, gaining an understanding of their challenges and learning how to ‘drive so others survive’. Lastly, ‘crash investigators’, this was a unique opportunity for us students to listen to a crash survivor and investigate the event that changed their life. Once the day was over and we had returned to school, we were given the opportunity to complete the RYDA booklets which once completed and signed off by a teacher gave us a total of 300 minutes of driving to put into learners’ logbooks.

STUDENT ASSISTANCE SCHEME (STAS)

The Student Assistance Scheme (otherwise known as STAS) was changed and broadened to provide more assistance to families in 2021 and this will continue in 2022.

If you are a current concession card holder (Centrelink Health Care Card, Low Income Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession card or a Department of Veterans Affairs Pensioner Concession Card) you can apply using the STAS form at:

https://stasonlinesubmission.education.tas.gov.au/

You will receive a letter confirming the outcome of your application approximately 14 days after it is submitted.

If you need access to a hard copy form, please contact your school, mail: stas@education.tas.gov.au or phone 1800 827 055.

Please note: if you are already receiving assistance, you don’t need to apply again.

COVID-19 VACCINATIONS FOR STUDENTS AGED 12 AND OVER

The Tasmanian Government is working hard to provide the COVID-19 vaccination to all Tasmanian’s aged 12 and above.

As you may be aware there have been a number of clinics run in colleges to vaccinate students in years 11 and 12. There will also be a small number of regional high schools that will host a vaccine clinic but this is not something that will be occurring at high schools in larger population centres at this point in time.

However, there are a number of different options available for parents to arrange for students aged 12 and above to be vaccinated, these include:

  1. At one of the community clinics across the state. Appointments can be made by visiting www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au/booking or calling the Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738.
  2. At participating GPs - contact your local GP directly to make a booking.
  3. At selected pharmacies - find one near you at findapharmacy.com.au

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family and the wider community from COVID-19. Don’t wait. Vaccinate.

Young people under the age of 16 are encouraged to attend their vaccination appointment with a parent or guardian.

There are a number of places where you are able to find more information in relation to the COVID-19 vaccine. You may like to look at this information with your child to support them in understanding more about the vaccination:

WALL OF PRIDE

The Exeter High School Wall of Pride is a pictorial record of former students who have achieved outstanding success in their chosen field of endeavour since leaving our school. It recognises positive contributions made in society, and achievement in its broadest sense.

A committee made up of staff, student and community representatives determine the degree to which nominees meet the general guidelines and decide on the recipient/s.

There is one essential criteria that all nominees must meet: A nominee must have completed Grade 10 at Exeter High School. (If any student attended another high school for another part of their high school years this is irrelevant).

The general guidelines are as follows:

  1. What personal qualities does this person have that makes them stand out in society?
  2. i.e., generosity, contribution to the community.
  3. What personal achievements has this person made, i.e., in academic study, business or sport?
  4. What contribution/s has this person made in their chosen field of endeavour, i.e., leadership, reliability, perseverance, initiative?

Please forward application(s) to:- Exeter High School, Wall of Pride Nominations, Glen Ard Mohr Road, Exeter Tas. 7275

Applications close Monday, 15th November 2021.

We are excited to get the show back up and running, and back to our community – this will be the 108th Exeter Show!

We will again have some exciting events for children. They are yet to be confirmed but, due to the successes in 2020, I would imagine they would be similar categories again in 2022 including:

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Cooking
  • Photography
  • Floral Art
  • Handicraft and Novelty

We would love to see as many children involved as possible.

It would be fantastic to get children growing and creating this school year as the show will be quickly upon us in the new school year (26th February, 2022).
