PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Our Year 10 students will soon be deciding on their future pathways for 2022. As in the past, Newstead and Launceston Colleges are options for Year 11, however, in 2022, other Launceston High Schools will be offering courses for Grade 11 students. Some examples of these are Prospect High which offers both Hospitality and Japanese and Kings Meadows who run a Construction Pathways program. Students will have the opportunity to visit these schools in week 6 of this term to find out more information about what’s on offer across the Launceston region. We will provide more information about times and dates and travel arrangements as soon as possible. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact Mr Stevenson at school to discuss.

Planning for 2022 at our school is already underway. Students will be shown the different Option subjects that will be offered next year over the coming weeks. When they bring the Option course selection booklets home, I would encourage you to discuss these with your child so that they are making informed decisions around their choices for next year.

CITY PARK RADIO, SHOW #4

In grade 9/10 Drama, we were given the opportunity to create our own radio show. The focus for our show was on the evolution of music from the 1950’s – 1990’s along with major events that took place through these decades.

We spent a great deal of class time researching and developing our show. In the two weeks leading up to it, we rehearsed every lunchtime. Much of our rehearsal time was spent on ensuring our voices were conversational, had emotion, changed in pitch, tone, emphasis and pace.

Our time came on the 22nd June when we performed our show on Launceston City Park Radio. At first, it was incredibly nerve-wracking, but after our first section, we started to find our feet and felt more comfortable and at ease. From that point on, it was just plain fun. We only had one hiccup during the show where one of our group members got their pages mixed up and lost their spot, but luckily, Isaac stepped in and covered the mistake.

Following the show, we felt completely relieved, we had put so much work into it. It was such an exciting experience being live on radio. So much so, that we are all considering studying media subjects at College next year. Thanks everyone for tuning into our show.

LAUNCESTON COLLEGE – GREASE PRODUCTION

Grade 9/10 Drama students attended Launceston College’s production of Grease on 5th August. Grease has always been a staple ’high school musical’ the world over with songs we can all hum along to. However, the 2021 musical looked a little different to the classic tale everyone knows.

Director Cheyne Mitchell ensured the audience would still recognise the same characters they knew and loved, but they were just framed differently.

“Danny was caught between friend groups, obligations, and a world he has always known. Whereas Sandy wasn’t as prim and proper as the Sandy you know. She made better choices than her friends, which put her on the outside of the group."

Another character change to Launceston College's version of Grease was a female T-Bird. "In 2021 there is no reason why a girl can't be a T-Bird," Mitchell has been quoted as saying.

Launceston College's version of Grease had certainly moved with the times and frowned upon the objectification of women.

The choreography was fresh and tightly timed, and lead roles shone in their acting and singing abilities. The set design, projections, lighting, smoke machine and live band enhanced and set the atmosphere for each scene. The show had incredible energy and was full of students having the time of their lives.

Yet again another incredible performance by the students from Launceston College (and former EHS students). We would rate it a 9 out of 10 – well worth a look!

  • Provide opportunities for young people to grow and challenge themselves.
  • Connect young people from all areas of the West Tamar.
  • Develop problem solving, communication and team work skills.
