Principal’s Report

Already, we are at the end of Week 6 in what has been a busy and very successful term here at Exeter High School. Our structured walkthroughs of classrooms as mentioned in the last newsletter are continuing, and these are providing us with information around how settled the classrooms are and the levels of engagement we are seeing from our students. I have been impressed with what I have seen, however, we will continue to strive to make further improvements in our learning spaces to ensure we are providing our students with the best learning opportunities possible.

Our Year 11 students are well and truly settled into their new learning space and it is fantastic to see the various subjects they are undertaking through the guidance of Mr Liam Fox, Mrs Jane Hall-Dadson and also online learning. The events of 2020 helped prepare our Year 11 students for this year where some of their subjects are studied through Virtual Learning. Our Years 7-10 students have also continued to embrace our new way of learning through a blend of teacher directed learning with the new tools we integrated throughout last year such as the CANVAS platform.

Over the past month, our Student Leadership Council have been presented with their blazers in a whole school assembly, participated in a camp and then attended a Leadership Conference at the Tailrace last Friday. This group of amazing young leaders are excited about the year ahead.

As we enter Autumn, it’s a timely reminder about the different choices students have for their winter uniform. Students can visit the uniform shop to look at the different options or talk to one of their teachers. As always, if families are finding it difficult to purchase new uniforms, please contact the school office to discuss the different options we have.

EHS Swim Trials Event

The annual Exeter High School Swimming Trials will be on Monday 22nd March at the Launceston Aquatic Centre.

Students will need to be prepared with bathers, towel, plastic bag etc. and wear their Exeter High sports uniform on this day. If students do not have a sports polo, plain blue shorts or track pants they will be required to wear their normal school uniform. Students must not wear free dress, skins or other non-uniform items.

Students will meet at the school gymnasium at 8.45am for an attendance check, ready to depart EHS at 9.00am. We will travel by bus to the Launceston Aquatic Centre and return to school by 3.00pm. Any students who intend to make their own way to LAC should inform Mrs Robinson before Monday 22nd March. All students will be transported by bus back to school unless they are collected in person by a parent or guardian before the group departs at 2.15pm.

Points from the individual events will contribute towards championship points and all events, including relays, will go towards house points. Students will be able to access the café at the venue between races, however it is strongly recommended that participants bring their own food, snacks and drinks on the day and do not just rely on the café facility.

International Women’s Day Breakfast

Each year, the Rotary Club of Tamar Sunrise hosts one of their club’s signature events: the International Women’s Day breakfast, celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and highlights gender parity and women’s rights.

Exeter High were fortunate enough to receive an invitation to this prestigious event. On the morning of the 10th March, Maddison, Abbey and Emily along with Mrs Parish, attended this very early breakfast at the Grand Chancellor to listen to special guest speakers Shona Markham, Tanya Harper and Amanda Blythe. This event afforded our students an opportunity to hear from and meet with local leaders and envisage future opportunities. The theme of the conference was “Choose to Challenge”. All three speakers were positive role models who discussed female empowerment, belief in oneself, taking up challenges and the changes that students could make in the future. The guest speakers showcased a unique range of experiences and cultures. Many stories were shared, and practical examples given – Tanya’s ‘old back pack’ analogy was particularly good. At the conclusion of the event, Exeter High students had the opportunity to personally question and mingle with the guest speakers. The breakfast was entertaining and thought provoking.

Program information (from Hockey Tasmania):

The 5 week Development program is aimed at athletes aged 10-14yrs. It is offered as an opportunity to further develop skills at all levels of ability, including athletes who may be working toward selection in Regional and State teams and those who may be aspiring for selection to the “Tigers Emerging Talent Academy” at age 14.

Program will be concentrating on the following:

Week 1 – passing and receiving
Week 2 – tackling
Week 3 – goalshooting
Week 4 – elimination skills
Week 5 – PCs

It is an opportunity to prepare for the junior season which will commence early in Term 2. Skills learned at the program will also help those players looking to nominate for the Regional Carnival held over the June Long Weekend in Launceston in 2021. Nominations for the Carnival will be opened at the end of March, closing end of April with selection trials held in early May.

As all National Championships were cancelled in 2020 due to Covid, extra focus will be placed on those seeking state selection in 2021 to help prepare them for trials.

Tamar Valley Vixens Rugby Club

Tamar Valley Vixens are Tasmania’s first sole female rugby union club made up of local students and professionals.

We aim to benefit the sporting community by creating a safe environment where women could play, support & enjoy rugby without fear of discrimination, or intimidation.

Tamar Valley Vixens Rugby Club is not just a sporting club but an entirely new way of looking at rugby. We believe that our game is a great way to empower the women in our community and foster the development of skills along the way

We have a really exciting few months ahead of us including scouts from Rugby Australia coming to Tasmania for the first time! Running alongside this, Vixens will run a dedicated Junior Girls Rugby Academy during 2021. We are looking for girls aged 12-16 to participate in this program which will include mentorship from one of our current senior women.
