Principal’s Report
Our grade 10 students have all now had the opportunity to undertake their 2021 enrolments and the feedback from both colleges has been overwhelmingly positive. Students have been very mature in taking on advice and feedback from their current teachers as well as the colleges’ course counsellors. We also have several students who will be moving into apprenticeships in various trades and I would like to congratulate these students too.
Another positive in relation to our Year 10 students were the way in which they applied themselves before and during their recent exams. These exams offer students the opportunity to prepare for and sit exams in similar conditions to what they will experience in college. Thank you to the teachers who organised and then marked these exams, providing students with valuable feedback. Our year 10 students are continuing to apply themselves during this term and this mature approach is so positive to see.
As I have previously mentioned, we will also have Year 11 students on campus here from next year. These students will be studying a Rural Operations course, along with traditional subjects such as Mathematics, English and Business Studies. This is an exciting time and opportunity for both the students involved and us as a school community. I look forward to sharing the journey of these students over the coming years, along with the amazing new teaching and learning facilities that are being built on our school farm during 2021.
We held a My Education Day at school last Thursday and students participated in various activities and lessons, designed to provide them with further insight into the endless possibilities that are available. These days are invaluable in broadening the horizons of our students and I hope that each and every one of our students takes hold of every opportunity that presents to them in the future.

Important Grade 10 Information
The Graduation Dinner at the Tailrace Centre and the Final Presentation Assembly are understandably major functions. Due to Covid-19 guidelines they will look quite different this year.
GRADUATION DINNER
The Graduation Dinner will be held at the Tailrace on Monday 14th December from 6.30pm til 9.30pm. The following changes will apply:
- The Graduation Dinner will be in a larger room to accommodate social distancing.
- Students will be able to dance as this will be held in a separate room to the dinner.
- Due to Covid-19 regulations, parents will be unable to congregate to watch students being dropped off at The Tailrace. If parents wish to take photos of their child, cars etc. we suggest that this is done prior to arrival at The Tailrace. Linda from Linda Pasfield Photography will be taking red carpet photos of students arriving and throughout the evening.
- We are allowed to have a whole group photo.
- At the end of the evening, parents can collect their child at The Tailrace entrance while remaining in their car. Staff will escort students to their parents.
- Students will need to arrive between 6.30 - 7.00 pm and be collected by 9.30 pm.
PRESENTATION ASSEMBLY
- The 2020 Presentation Assembly will be held on Friday 11th December between 11.00am – 12.40pm.
- Parents will be invited to attend, however, we will need to follow Departmental protocols regarding signing in and social distancing etc. Further details will be available in the coming weeks.
- Grade 10 students will be allowed to sign out for the remainder of the day if their parents are in attendance at the assembly.
Other activities that the Grade 10 students will be involved in are listed on our calendar in this newsletter.
Grade 8 English
In English Grade 8 students recently created a portfolio of poems inspired by the themes in Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman. The following poems show the outstanding use of poetic devices. Well done Grade 8’s.
Waiting Alana 8A The silence is overwhelming And the fear suffocating Waiting for the ticking time bomb Waiting, waiting, waiting Laying down low The air still like a corpse Waiting for the ticking time bomb About to blow us away with all its force Hearing heartbeats hammer And with death so near Waiting for the ticking time bomb Choking in fear |
Women in Afghanistan Shaylan 8D They live in a society like a prison. Swallowed by the wishes of villainous men. Engulfed by darkened man-made cloth. School to far away to run to. Pulled back to the house by greedy hands. Pencils and books the weapons of women. Guns and power the weapons of men. A loophole of endless battles like dog fights. Women driven away by the mad barks of power. Men left standing at the top of the hill. Women barricaded behind doors of law. Battles continue luring people in like helpless pray. |
The Carnival Imogen 8D Their expressions are more stoic than a stone wall This place is as crowded as a carnival But no one is smiling and there are no rides. The children here look hopeless and miserable. Like they are stuck on an iceberg waiting to sink. Even when everyone’s loud and making noise All I can hear is a ringing as the world seems to slow down. No where to go, no place to call home. I’m watching, wishing, waiting. For the day where I can go far away. I’m running a marathon that I can’t win The people in front of me are faster and know where the shortcuts are. But all I want is to live in Harmony. |
Refugee Camp Ben 8B Hundreds of tents sit side by side Hungry people waiting inside All they want is a safe place to live Is that so much to give? The kids are out playing explorer Or trying to sell bottles of water They try their hardest to sell them to a friend But nobody has money to spend The starving families that haven’t eaten in days Lay waiting in the crowded tent maze All they wish is to come to Australia If only the immigration system wasn’t such a failure |
My Education 2020
My Education at Exeter High School supports students in making important life choices around planning for their future. It helps them to identify their personal interests, values, strengths, opportunities and aspirations, and teaches them how to use this knowledge to make decisions about their future learning, work and life opportunities. It has been shown that students who consider their interests and opportunities early on have a clearer picture about who they are and what they might like to do. Research has shown that students who are actively engaged in shaping their own life and career have:
- Improved relationships
- Higher aspirations
- An increase in confidence and self esteem
- Healthier lifestyle habits
- A more positive outlook on life.
A variety of activities were undertaken in each of the grades as part of the EHS My Education Day on Thursday 12th November.
- Grade 7 – Looked at the term Resilience and what it means to be a resilient person.
- Grade 8 – Looked at transferrable skills and traits, critical thinking and teamwork, co-operation and leadership. Students engaged very well with the content and activities, making for an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all.
- Grade 9 - Initial focus on Speed Careering (listening to nine presenters regarding their career path, skills and knowledge they’ve gained in their lifetime), students discussed what is needed to get a part-time job, started to work on creating or updating their resume, and they explored the My Futures website which enables them to delve into the skills needed for career options that interest them. The grade 9’s enjoyed some team building time playing Lawn Bowls, and finished the day working through Road Safety modules online.
- Grade 10 – Initial focus on Speed Careering (listening to nine presenters regarding their career path, skills and knowledge they’ve gained in their lifetime), finalising and submitting Transition Plans, Graduation Dinner Etiquette, understanding the new changes to the Graduated Licensing System, Role play in looking at the protective role of the Graduated Licensing System and interactive RYDA activities focussing on recognising tiredness, peripheral vision and reaction time and how these impact on driving.

Exeter High Athletics
Wednesday 4th November and Thursday 5th November saw approximately 200 students participate in the annual Athletics Carnival at Windsor Park. The atmosphere across both days was relaxed, friendly and genuinely supportive as students pitted themselves against each other in Division 1 events and enjoyed friendly participation in Division 2 events.
The conditions proved difficult for some event records to be broken, however congratulations to Avery Thomas in Year 7, who smashed the Discus record by over 4 metres and equalled the High Jump record for Year 7 Boys.
The following students achieved the highest point tallies for individual events in track and field events and have been awarded Track and Field Champions for 2020. They will be presented with medallions at assemblies later in the year.

https://stasonlinesubmission.education.tas.gov.au/

School Yearbook
We are currently taking orders for the 2020 EHS Yearbook “Tatana”. If you would like a copy, please contact the school or ask your child to collect an order form from the Admin office. Cost of the yearbook is $20.00, and orders must be placed before 27 November to secure your copy.
Ordering from the School Canteen via Qkr!
Ordering food and drink from the school canteen via Qkr! is fast and easy, and we’re pleased that many of our students and parents/guardians use the App. We are concerned, however, that some money and food/drink is going to waste because students aren’t aware that orders have been made on their behalf. Parents/guardians who use Qkr! to order from the school canteen on their child’s behalf must also tell their child that food and drink will be prepared and available for them to collect at recess and/or lunch. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.
Reporting Student Absences via SMS Messages
You can now respond to the SMS messages you receive in relation to your child’s absence from school. Please remember to include your child’s name on your response.
