Principal’s Report
Once again, it is the end of term and thankfully, this term has been far less uneventful than the first two terms. Our students have continued to apply themselves in a most diligent manner across all subject areas and I am grateful that we have such an excellent group of students here at Exeter High School. I also want to thank our entire staff for their continued work in supporting our students, whatever their roles.
Visits between Grade 5/6 students from our feeder primary schools and our campus are well underway and we look forward to welcoming these students back next term for further visits to support them in their transition to high school. A special thank you to Mrs Youd who has been driving this program.
Students have had the opportunity to select their new Option subjects for 2021. They have also printed out a receipt to bring home for parents to have a discussion around the subjects that they have chosen. If you have any questions around this, please feel free to contact your child’s Grade Leader early next term.
Mr Finnigan and his Science group deserve special mention as they participated in the annual Science and Engineering challenge on Monday and were placed second against other Launceston High Schools. This was a remarkable feat and reflects the excellent academic standards we see every day in our school.
Have a great holiday break and I look forward to seeing everyone back for Term 4.

The Addams Family
They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're altogether ooky,
The Addams Family.
Last Friday the 18th September, Year 8 and 10 Arts (Drama, Music and Visual Art) students visited Newstead College to view their major production for 2020, The Addams Family directed by Alarna Hingston.
The Addams Family featured an original story, and it was every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, had grown up and fallen in love with a sweet young man from a respectable family – a man her parents had never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confided in her father and begged him not to tell her mother. Gomez Addams had to do something he’d never done before – he kept a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything changed for the whole family on the fateful night they hosted a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents. It was an enthusiastic production with well-developed, ‘way out there’ characters.
Some comments from students:
A fun and enjoyable show can’t wait until the next one.
Absolutely brilliant, loved every minute of it.
It was awesome to finally see a performance after COVID–19 restrictions.
Fantastic! Well done to the cast and crew. Loved the sets and costumes.
Loved the character of Uncle Fester, he was so energetic and kooky.

Science and Engineering Challenge
On Monday, 21st September, a group of Grade 9/10 students travelled to the University of Tasmania to compete in the Science and Engineering Challenge, which was first established at the University of Newcastle. During the day, students competed in various challenges, interacting with people from other schools as well as working on teamwork, problem solving, construction and STEM. Out of the six schools competing Exeter placed 2nd, the best Exeter High has performed. Due to the current circumstances of Covid-19, Tasmania is the only state able to partake in this year’s competition. The day was a fun way to experience different aspects of science.

Senior Sport – Round 6 & 7 (9/9 and 16/9 2020)
In Round 6, the combined 2nds team had a tough match against the depth of the Kings Meadows team. Our defenders saw a lot of the action, with much of the play at the opposition’s scoring end. The girls continued to play solidly for all four quarters but could not match the skill of their opponents. In the final round of the season, Exeter matched Prospect in the first quarter, but some tactical changes saw Prospect streak ahead in the second, with our girls playing catch-up for the remainder of the match.
The 1sts Netball team experienced another difficult battle in Round 6 against Kings Meadows. Round 7, saw a match-up against our West Tamar rivals Riverside. The previous two encounters resulted in victories of one goal, however in the final round of the season the Exeter girls were able to exert their control over the game and defeat Riverside by a convincing four goals.
The Exeter Soccer Team have continued their winning streak and are a force to be reckoned with. Round 6 saw another win over St. Mary’s and Exeter backed up in the final round of the season with a solid win over Brooks High School.

Forensics Trip to the Launceston Police Station 2020
On Wednesday 23rd September, the Grade 9/10 Forensics class plus Mr Pratap visited the Launceston Police Station as part of looking into the working life of a Forensics Officer. Senior Constable Annabel Shegog was very enthusiastic and informative in her description of what occurs behind the scenes of a very busy police station. The students were shown the reception area, the yard where the different types of police vehicles are kept and the booking area where suspected criminals are processed including obtaining samples of DNA, photos and fingerprints. Sgt Jareth Anderson gave a very interesting demonstration of the protective vest and equipment required by police on patrol nowadays. Upstairs we were fortunate to meet one of the very busy Forensic officers, Senior Constable Maree Fish, who showed us the methodology behind the gathering of forensic evidence, the clothes they have to wear to every suspected crime scene as well as explaining the ‘chain of evidence’ that retains the authenticity of the evidence for use in a court of law. Students gained a very valuable insight into what it is like to work in such a technical field of science and were able to link much of the work we do in class to the role of a Forensics officer. Fang the playful drug detecting dog also popped in for a visit along with his handler, 1/C Constable Gavin Storay. He explained to us the many roles and situations that Fang is involved in.
Our thanks go to Senior Constable Shegog and the Launceston Police department for allowing us to visit their place of work and to be given such a fascinating tour.
