Principal’s Report

Dear Families,

I want to begin this newsletter by thanking everyone within our school community for the way you have embraced the changes that we have needed to make this term. Our Teachers and Teacher Assistants have worked extremely hard preparing high-quality lessons for each class and students have overwhelmingly engaged with the learning platform Canvas. Our Administration team and EFA’s have also done an outstanding job throughout the holidays ensuring our school was ready for learning.

I have also been proud of the feedback that students have provided to our teachers where they have regularly said how appreciative they are of the work their teachers have provided. This is testament to the amazing culture we have here at Exeter High School in relation to students taking pride in themselves as learners. Teachers are in regular contact with students through email, phone calls and Canvas but as I have said all along, if you or your child have any questions or concerns, please contact the teacher as soon as possible.

We will continue to forward any correspondence we receive from the Education Department through to families over the coming weeks. Thank you once again for everyone’s contributions to making the start of term 2 such a smooth one.

Principal

NBN Support for those Students without Internet at Home

To help Australians respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, NBN Co is providing up to $50 million to assist phone and internet providers to support low-income family households with school-aged children who do not currently have an active NBN connection at home.

This funding will help phone and internet providers create more affordable offers to connect eligible families during Term 2. More than 20 phone and internet providers nationwide have agreed to participate in this program.

The assistance period runs from 1 April 2020 to 30 September 2020. Each phone and internet provider have their own pricing structure and may still charge a fee for monthly access, data costs and account set up fees.

Phone and internet providers that are ready to connect customers as of 1 May 2020 are:

Cambodia 2021

Next year will, hopefully, see our third Cambodia trip take place. At this stage we are being optimistic that international travel will be approved by the department and able to go ahead. In the current climate it is not possible to hold an information evening, so we are asking parents of students currently in years 8 and 9 to have a chat to see if your child is interested in attending.

If that is the case it would be worth starting to put money aside to pay for the trip, as you could be looking at around $3,500. The price includes: all travel costs (planes, busses, tuk-tuks etc); all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) including purified water; entry fees into places such as Cambodian temples, museums, Singapore Zoo; Western style accommodation with en-suite, that usually has a swimming pool; and travel insurance while on the ground in Cambodia and Singapore. In the past the trip has been held in the last week of term 3 and goes into the school holidays, we would anticipate a similar time frame next year. The trip would be for 12 days, including travelling time.

If you would like more information a letter, which was created after our first meeting in 2019 detailing all that was discussed, will be available from the school office. At this point staffing for the trip has not been finalised, but if you wish to find out more information you can look on International Journeys facebook page or contact the school and speak to Angela Howie, Skye Champion, Naomi Cartledge or Stefan Lendvay.

Canteen update for term 2

Breakfast Club for term 2 has commenced again. It will open on Wednesday and Friday morning from the kitchen in the Home Economics block from 8.30am till 8.55am. Please call by, have something to eat and drink, and say hello to Paul our school Chaplain.

Defence Jobs (ADF)

There's still time for students to apply for an ADF Gap Year, but they’ll need to apply soon so they don't miss out on their preference.

The valuable work and life lessons gained during an ADF Gap Year are transferable and will give your students confidence in their future career paths. They can get real engineering experience, discover their leadership potential as an officer, or find passion in an administration role.

While ADF Gap Year roles initially involve only a 12-month commitment, it could be the beginning of a long and stable career in the ADF.

Students who take part in the ADF Gap Year program:

  • Enjoy a great salary package plus free healthcare
  • Gain valuable skills and work experience
  • Have job security and stability
  • Live a varied, active and healthy lifestyle
  • Make friends with like-minded people
  • Have the opportunity to see more of Australia
