Principal’s Report

Last Wednesday saw us host the Grade 5/6 students for their Orientation Day in preparation for them attending here in the coming years. I was really impressed with the way these students interacted together and with our staff and I look forward to them making valuable contributions to our school in the future.

We also held a Parent Information evening that night where many parents of these students attended to gain more of an insight into what their child’s high schooling will look like and I thank those parents for coming to the session. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about any aspect of your child’s education, please contact the school so that we can quickly address these.

Mrs Sharon Parish and Mrs Leah Blazely were both recently acknowledged for 25 years’ service to the education department. Congratulations to both Sharon and Leah for this worthy acknowledgement and thank you for your continued service to our school.

The 2020 School Leadership Council (SLC) has been announced and I wish to congratulate all students who applied to be on the SLC and I am very confident that the students selected for these roles next year will do an amazing job, such is the calibre of the successful candidates.

Validation packs have been sent home with all students and can I please ask that all forms are returned to the school office no later than Friday December 13th. Thank you in advance for your support in this important administrative matter.

Inter-High Athletics Carnival 2019

On Friday 22nd November, a team of 70 students accompanied by Mr Stewart, Mrs Youd and Mrs Robinson travelled to St Leonard’s Athletics Centre to participate in the Division 1 Inter-high Athletics Carnival. The weather was perfect, as was Exeter’s start to the day, with a win in the very first track event from Connor in the Grade 10 Boys 200 metres.

Throughout the day, Exeter continued to prove competitive across track and field events and showed excellent team spirit to “step-up” to fill events when required. There were some outstanding individual performances on the day with no less than 29 individuals achieving podium finishes. Stand out performers for Exeter High, with multiple placings include: Chloe in (Year 7), Connor (Year 10), Shania (Year 7) and Paige (Year 8). Congratulations also to the Year 10 Boys 4 x 100m Relay team who finished in 2nd place.

Exeter finished in 5th place overall which was enough to secure our position in the Division 1 carnival next year. For the third year in a row, Exeter High claimed the Equity Shield which recognises the best performing school based on enrolment numbers.

ASCENT PROGRAM

During Term 4, a group of Grade 9 girls were asked to take part in a program called ASCENT (Achieve Strength, Courage Empowerment and Nurture Together). The aim of the program was to build identity, self-esteem and resilience in young people. Each session included an education and recreation component. The majority of activities were run at the PCYC including Trampolining, Archery Tag, Rock Wall climb, Yoga & Meditation. However, we got to spent one day at the AMC completing the Marine Survival course. Another week we headed to Devonport for a private tour of the Spirit of Tasmania. We are looking forward to completing the course at Hollybank on the High ropes course!!

Forensic Excursion to the Launceston Police Station

On Wednesday 4th December, the year 9/10 Forensics class plus Mr Pratap visited the Launceston Police Station as part of looking into the work life of a Forensics officer. Senior Constable Annabel Shegog was very enthusiastic and informative in her description of what occurs behind the scene of a very busy police station. The students were shown the reception area, the yard where the different types of police vehicles are kept and the booking area where suspected criminals are processed including obtaining samples of DNA, photos and fingerprints. Upstairs we were fortunate to meet one of the very busy Forensic officers, 1/C Constable Pete McCarron, who showed us the methodology behind the gathering of forensic evidence, the clothes they have to wear to every suspected crime scene as well as explaining the ‘chain of evidence’ that retains the authenticity of the evidence for use in a court of law. Students gained a very valuable insight into what it is like to work in such a technical field of science and were able to link much of the work we do in class to the role of a Forensics officer. Fang the playful drug detecting dog also popped in for a visit along with his handler, 1/C Constable Gavin Storay. He explained to us the many roles and situations that Fang is involved in. Our thanks go to Senior Constable Shegog and the Launceston Police department for allowing us to visit their place of work and to be given such an informative tour.

Grade 8 Theatre Performance

On Tuesday 3rd December, grade 8 Drama students performed two, one hour shows, to Exeter Primary School Students from grades 3 - 6.

Between Good and Evil is a comedy stage play about Aliens and Heroes. This stage play involves several independent scenes: Touched by an Alien, Protecto, Stung, Mugged in Metropolis, Superhero Support Group and Super Dead Man. These scenes explore the idea that the whole course of human history may depend on a change of heart in one solitary and even humble individual – for it is in the solitary mind and soul of the individual that the battle between good and evil is waged and ultimately won or lost.

Grade 8 students have been working on this play all term, and been through many hours of auditions, blocking and rehearsals. Both shows were warmly received by EPS students.

Some comments from the grade 8 performers:

  • It was incredibly nerve wracking, but exciting at the same time
  • An interesting experience that we will remember for years to come
  • I’m still buzzing from it!
  • It was well organised and fantastic to work as a team
  • Loved how close we got through this
  • It was a memorable experience
  • Great team work and co-operation!
  • It was so worth all the hard work
  • Performing two shows just make you want to do it all again. It was awesome!
  • It was terrifying to start with, but exhilarating when we performed to live audiences
