Principal’s Report
I often comment in this newsletter about how impressed visitors to Exeter High School are about how calm and settled the classrooms and schoolyard areas are. Two weeks ago, Mr Grant Armitstead who is the Principal at Reece High School, visited the school and he commented several times about how impressed he was in what he saw. On our tour of the school, students were working in classrooms in a diligent manner and at break times, they were interacting in a sensible and calm manner – exactly the behaviours we now see and expect in our school.
All parents of children who participated in the 2019 NAPLAN assessments will receive an individual report in the coming weeks. These reports will show each student’s results in the areas of numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and these results are outlined on an achievement scale. As is always the case, NAPLAN only gives an indication of a student’s performance on the day of testing and the results should be interpreted with care. If you have any questions or concerns around your child’s NAPLAN results, please contact their Core teacher of that subject to discuss.
Congratulations to all of our Winter Sports teams who have represented the school over the past two terms. Thank you also to the teachers involved in coaching the teams each week. We were also successful in winning our Grand Final matches in Football and Netball.
Students in Grades 7-9 will have the opportunity to select their Option classes for 2020 in the coming weeks. Please have a conversation with your child around which courses they are intending to select and they will also have an options booklet to bring home that details each subject and what is covered in that course.
Parents have also been posted the annual Parent Satisfaction survey. Please take the time to complete this survey as we are able to use the results from this to guide our planning for the future year.
I would like to remind parents and students that once students arrive at school, they are required to remain on school grounds and must not leave until the end of the day. This includes students arriving by bus who must enter the school grounds as soon as they get off the bus. This is a major duty of care issue and I appreciate everyone’s support in this matter.

Exeter Excels in NHSSA Sport Grand Finals
On Wednesday 4th September, two of our four senior sports teams participated in their respective grand final matches to complete Exeter High School’s involvement in the NHSSA winter roster for 2019. Our 2nds B Netball team and 2nds Football teams both finished the season on top of the ladder and were successful in progressing through the semi-finals to secure grand final berths and premiership flags.
The senior netball team defeated Kings Meadows B (16 – 13) in a nail-biting affair at Hobbler’s Bridge. Some outstanding defensive work from Gemma and Georgina managed to shut-down the opposition’s goal attack, while swift ball movement and brilliant intercepts through the midcourt from the Exeter girls were rewarded with some outstanding goal shooting from Jaycee and Kristyn.

At Prospect Park, the senior football team were victorious against Prospect High with a convincing score line of EHS 13.18.96 def. PHS 3.5.23. A fantastic team effort set up the following goal scorers: Malcolm (6), Declan (3), Jaiden (1), Liam (1), Samuel (1) and Charlie (1).
Congratulations to Jasmine and Samuel who were awarded the NHSSA Player of the Match medallions.

My Education Day
My Education at Exeter High School supports students in making important life choices around planning for their future. It helps them to identify their personal interests, values, strengths, opportunities and aspirations, and teaches them how to use this knowledge to make decisions about their future learning, work and life opportunities. It has been shown that students who consider their interests and opportunities early on have a clearer picture about who they are and what they might like to do. Research has shown that students who are actively engaged in shaping their own life and career have:
- Improved relationships
- Higher aspirations
- An increase in confidence and self esteem
- Healthier lifestyle habits
- A more positive outlook on life.
A variety of activities were undertaken in each of the grades as part of the EHS My Education Day on Thursday 12th September.
- Grade 7 – Focus on resilience – using books and film as stimulus, EHS amazing race and Career Expo
- Grade 8 – Focus on self-awareness and code switching (changing your body language and the way you speak in different situations), self-awareness in the digital world and the Career Expo
- Grade 9- Career Expo, exploring My Futures website, researching exhibitors at the Career Expo and resumes
- Grade 10 – Career Expo, activities based on navigating year 11 and 12 courses, Transition Plans and How to cope with being under the ‘pump’.
EHS Career Expo
Education is everybody’s business, including schools, parents and the community. We are all working together to ensure students can be the best they possibly can be. Building community partnerships ensures students can continue to grow as life-long learners. To this end, Exeter High School held a Career Expo in the gym and immediate carpark on Thursday 12th September as part of our My Education program. The purpose of this event was to expose students to a wide range of potential careers and to gain a sense of the opportunities on offer within our local and regional area.
Two sessions were held for senior and junior students where they were able to ‘roam’ the stalls and actively engage with the stallholders. A detailed quiz was completed by everyone as a part of this session.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to the following businesses/organisations who supported our Career Expo and gave up their time to do so:
- Effective NaturallyUniversity of Tasmania - Timberlink Australia - Tasmania Police - Defence Force - Linda Pasfield Photography - Fire Brigade - Rotary Club - Youth Development Officer - West Tamar Council - Petuna Group - Tas State Emergency Service - Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service - TAFE: Hairdressing, Building |
- Dairy Tas - Chilli FM - The Pharmacy Guild - Arbre Forest Industries - Exeter Child Care - Nigel’s Gourmet on Tamar - Grindelwald Tamar Valley Resort - Nursing - Psychology - Social Work - Think Big Printing - Australian Maritime College - Tasmanian Hospitality Association - Buckby Motors |

ICAS Academic Competitions 2019
It is with regret that we inform parents that the ICAS Academic Competitions will not be conducted this year due to circumstances beyond our control. Exeter High School has been involved in these competitions for over 12 years and have experienced tremendous success over this time. For the first time this year, all six of the ICAS competitions were to be conducted in an on-line format, with the paper version no longer available. The competition providers have experienced significant issues moving to the on-line format and the necessary data and information was unable to be distributed to schools in time for the sitting dates. If you require any further details, please contact Mrs Robinson at school on 6394 4366.

2019 Tailrace to Riverbend Park Fitness-based Excursion
On Wednesday 18th September, students enrolled in the NHSSA Sport Options and the Senior Sport Education class will attend an excursion to engage in fitness-based activities from Tailrace Park to Riverbend Park.
Students will travel by bus from Exeter High (departing at 12.45pm) to Tailrace and split into 3 graded group (based on fitness levels, preparation and engagement):
Group A will run from Tailrace, up the Zig-zag track and back down the other side of the Gorge to finish at Riverbend Park.
Group B will jog from Tailrace along the bike path and boardwalk to finish at Riverbend Park.
Group C will walk along the footpath from Tailrace and boardwalk to finish at Riverbend Park.
There will be a staff member with each group and three additional staff to negate numbers for larger groups and to have a staff member wearing a high-visibility vest stationed at the bridge to ensure all students cross safely to access the Zig-zag track.
Students can participate in playground activities at Riverbend Park before returning by bus to school. Students will be back on-site by 3.05pm.
Any students who wish to be collected from Riverbend Park will need to have a written note and arrange for their parent/guardian to speak with an EHS staff member at the collection point before they will be permitted to leave with that person.
Exeter Golf Club Excursion for Health and Wellbeing Classes
On Monday 16 September, 10A and 10C will visit the Exeter Club as part of their Health and Wellbeing class. Then on Thursday 19, 10B will be going. Students will attend during lesson 3 on both dates.
Grade 9/10 COOKING
Year 9/10 students were given a design brief which included making a cake without eggs and decorating it with a football theme in mind.
Operation Christmas Child
A group of Grade 7 and 8 students helped pack Operation Christmas Child boxes to send to children living in developing countries in the Asia Pacific region. The boxes each contained something to wear, something for school, something to play with, an item for personal hygiene, something to love and something special. Thank you Chloe, Eliza, Addison, Eve, Phoebe and Paige for donating items for the boxes and giving up your time to be involved in this worthwhile community service project.

Qkr! App at EHS
The Qkr! App allows student Canteen orders to be placed and paid for via one easy to use App. The App is available for both students and parents to use. There is an instruction sheet included in this newsletter. We are endeavouring to get our uniform on Qkr! as well and further information will follow around this shortly.
