Principal’s Report

Professional Learning Day – Student Free Day

A reminder that the first Monday (22nd July) of Term 3 is a Professional Learning Day for teachers. Students are not required to return to school until Tuesday 23rd July.

Monday and Tuesday nights saw parents from across all grades come into school with their children for our three-way interviews. This was an excellent opportunity for parents and students to read the mid-year reports and set goals for the remainder of the year. Thank you to the teaching staff for the tremendous amount of work they put into writing these reports each year. For our students, these comprehensive reports should act as an indicator of how their year has been to date and give guidance in relation to areas to focus on for the remainder of the year. We would also like to thank the SLC members who came along on both nights to hand out reports.

The Inter High Cross Country was held at Kings Meadows High School last week and our athletes represented our school with pride and there were some outstanding performances. Congratulations to all students who represented our school on the day. Chloe White and Georgia Woods both performed exceptionally well, coming second in their races and Oliver Kwan came third in his event. Our Grade 8 boys won their group, whilst the Grade 7 and 10 girls came second. We came third overall which is an amazing effort given our smaller student size compared to other high schools. As Mrs Robinson often says ‘Once again, Exeter High School has punched well above its weight’.

Our Grade 10 students attended Launceston and Newstead Colleges for their orientation visits last week and these visits were excellent opportunities for students to get a feel for college life next year. Please take the time to talk to your child if they are in Grade 10 about the different options on offer for them in 2020 as they have some important decisions to make in the coming months. Both colleges will visit the school later in the year to do formal enrolments and parents are welcome to attend these sessions to help their child make informed decisions around their study choices for the following year.

An Art enrichment program has been running at Exeter Primary School and this has been a wonderful opportunity for some of our junior students who have created a range of art pieces in conjunction with a visiting artist. Thank you to the primary school for inviting our students to participate in such a rich activity.

Last Friday saw five classes from Exeter Primary School, (ranging from Prep to Grade 2’s) visit our school to attend a Children’s Theatre being performed by Grade 8 Drama students. This provided our students with the opportunity to perform to an authentic audience and showcase their amazing talents. Thank you to Mrs Parish for organising the performance and visit.

I would also like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday period and look forward to seeing all our students on Tuesday 23rd July.

Grade 8 Drama Performance

On Friday 29th June, at 9.30 am, Grade 8 Drama students presented two Children’s Theatre plays to Exeter Primary School (EPS) students from Prep – Grade 2. The City of Dreams was a short play following a group of animals trying to find their place in the world. They were no longer wanted by their owners and were on a quest to find the City of Dreams.

Stone Soup was an entertaining tale retold by Janea Dahl. Tired and hungry soldiers approach the villagers for food and a place to rest. The unknown soldiers frighten the villagers, but suggest to make stone soup. The villagers are excited by this idea and eagerly set out to help.

The Kinder – Grade 2’s loved the performances! Much squealing, laughter and excitement was heard from the audience. At the completion of the two performances, EPS students were allowed to ask the Grade 8 students a variety of questions about the play, what it was like being involved in drama and how it felt performing to an audience.

Thank you to Mrs Jordan, Mrs Niekamp and Mr Pratap who helped out with some of the props and costumes and a huge thanks to EPS students for coming across to watch these performances.

Until next time,

Here at the West Tamar Council, we support young people residing in our municipality that have been selected to participate or compete in an event of local, national or international significance.

Before confirmation of support, we do require a request letter from the individual/group and also the confirmation letter from the sporting/representative association of the individual’s placement in the team/competition. The minimum criteria that will apply to any consideration of a donation is as follows:

  • Must be an amateur event.
  • The applicant must reside within the West Tamar Municipal Area.
  • The applicant must be required by their organisation to meet a substantial amount of the expense.
  • The sponsorship from outside organisations the individual will receive

The amount of the maximum donation to apply is as follows:

  • To participate locally or nationally - $50-$100/individual
  • To participate outside Australia - $200/individual
