Principal’s Report
It’s hard to believe that I am already writing about report collection which will occur in the last week of this term. 3 way conversations between your child’s teachers, yourself and your child will be held on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd July between 3.30 and 7.00 pm. These are important opportunities to read your child’s reports and then have a follow-up conversation with the teacher about the progress being made and what your child needs to focus on in the future. I would also like to thank our teachers for the tremendous job they have done writing each student’s reports.
Winter Sport is well underway and our three coaches have all reported that their teams are playing well as a cohesive group and that they are playing each week in a competitive and fair manner. Please feel free to come along and support your child’s team and witness first-hand the way they are working together to represent Exeter High School each week.
We are currently working alongside our School Leadership Team to decide on some furniture upgrades for the breakout areas in the grade blocks and library. This is only possible because of the way our students respect and care for the furniture in their current break out areas and is a great example of how student voice is having an input into the decisions we make here as a school community.
The winter months are well and truly upon us and I have been pleased to see the majority of our students continue to set high standards in relation to wearing full school uniform each day. As previously mentioned, neither hoodies nor denim jeans are a part of the school uniform that has been endorsed by the School Association. We as a school, fully understand that uniforms can be expensive to update and replace, however, financial support and payment plans are always available here at Exeter High, so please contact the school should you wish to discuss these options.

EHS Cross Country Carnival 2019
On Friday 7th June, the annual Cross Country Carnival was held in perfect winter conditions. The Grade 7’s kicked off the afternoons events with a very good level of participation and fierce pace for the initial lap of the oval. Some excellent times and personal bests were posted across all grade groups despite no records being broken on the day. Students were able to enjoy the sunshine whilst supporting their respective house mates and listening to the commentary and random jokes from our commentator Mr Clarke. Well done to all of our participants and congratulations to the following students who won their events on the day:

Inter-High Cross Country Change of Date
The annual Inter-high Cross Country carnival has been postponed and will now take place on Tuesday 25 June at Kings Meadows High School.
Revitalising School Farm Program
As part of the revitalising school farms program, it was identified that the drainage system on our school farm was in dire need of repairing. In consultation with a soil drainage specialist Stage 1 of works was underway in May, with further stages to follow post winter. The aim of this work is to reduce surface ponding and in turn increase aeration allowing for improved plant growth, less pugging and earlier access to low lying paddocks.
This work would not be possible without the incredible service, generosity and professionalism of Jason Beckett and his team from Beckett’s Mining and Civil Contractors. A highlight of this project is the connection between local business and Exeter High School.

Agricultural Excursion

On Friday 31st May, ten students from the 9/10 full year Agricultural Studies class went to the Mitchelson’s Farm “Colynn” at Quamby Bend. In the morning we learnt basic sheep husbandry skills. All safety precautions were taken and everything was done in the safest way possible for both us and the sheep. After we drafted the sheep from the lambs, we marked lambs by ear tagging, giving them their injections, ringing them and tail docking. We drenched the ewes and crutched muttons. We even helped to unload 1400 Merinos that arrived on agistment. We went four wheel driving in our mini bus to get from paddock to paddock and had a barbeque lunch, cooked by Ian and Janet. In the afternoon we pulled down some old fences from around a pivot circle and helped put up new ones. In small groups with all the gear we set off and installed strainer posts, rolled and strained the new wire, put insulators on and applied staples to hold the fence in place. We learnt about the GPS technology in the tractor and how to use the hydraulic post rammer to put wooden posts in. We’d like to thank Al, Ian and Janet for a fantastic day on their farm.

UTAS Science and Engineering Challenge

On 23rd May a group of twenty two enthusiastic Exeter High students, led by Mr. Pratap set out to partake in the 2019 Science and Engineering Challenge. The Science and Engineering challenge is day aimed to change perceptions based around the world of science and engineering. The day was a great success with many students picking up valuable skills. Upon arriving at the UTAS Newnham campus, the students were split into coloured groups determining their activities for the day. Activities ranged from building bridges and furniture to connecting cities of electricity and making bionic hands. Activities lasted for a full day or half a day, disturbed by a well-earned lunch break. The day was well organised with intriguing and challenging activities. After the activities were complete, bridges were tested in front of all the competing schools. Exeter’s bridge being the lightest. Overall, Exeter high came 4th out of the nine schools attending the day and we were pleased with our efforts.

UTAS Discovery Day

On Monday 3rd June a group of students went to the University of Tasmania to participate in the UTAS Discovery Day. This day was intended to provide experience and opportunities for students in careers they may want to pursue in the future. The day was filled with lots of free pens and a new set of information. Subjects such as marine engineering, psychology, nursing and environmental justice were up for offer. These subjects ranged from lectures to practical dissections. When students arrived they were sent out into their facility groups in which they would then spend the next hour enjoying and learning about their chosen topic. In the marine engineering class, students learnt about buoyancy through a practical exercise in which they made boats out of common household materials. Nursing students attended to simulated human dummies finding their radial and carotid pulses and psychology students embarked on puzzles and mind games which stimulated the brain. The day concluded with free nachos for lunch and discussions about all the new things learnt.

The minimum criteria that will apply to any consideration of a donation is as follows:
- Must be an amateur event.
- The applicant must reside within the West Tamar Municipal Area.
- The applicant must be required by their organisation to meet a substantial amount of the expense.
- The sponsorship from outside organisations the individual will receive
- That council sponsorship funds are available
The amount of the maximum donation to apply is as follows:
- To participate locally or nationally - $50-$100/individual
- To participate outside Australia - $200/individual
- Representative groups/schools - $500 per group
