Principal’s Report

At the recent Inter-high swimming carnival, our students did an exceptional job representing our school. Georgia Woods and Taylor Raine both broke records at this event and were recognised at our recent whole school celebration assembly. This is an outstanding effort by these girls as it means that they are the fastest Northern high school swimmers to have ever competed in these events. Congratulations again to all of our Inter-high swimming team.

Each Grade’s nominated Student Representative Council members were also recognised at this assembly and I look forward to seeing the work these students undertake throughout the year

The school’s annual Trivia night was held last Friday night and was another very enjoyable and successful school event. Thank you to all of our families, staff and community members who came along and made it such a fun and successful evening. Thank you also to Mr Stewart and the SLC team for organising the event.

Our school nurse Dave has begun running Drumbeat sessions of a Friday lunchtime. This program teaches students to not only play drums in rhythm but also to regulate their feelings and emotions. I would encourage students to come along of a Friday to see how the program works and join in if they want to – everyone is welcome.

Grade 10 student Josephine recently sent the Rotary Club an application for sponsorship so she could be part of a student exchange program to either Finland or Poland in 2020. Mr Neil Warnock, President of the local Rotary Club contacted her last week to let her know her application had been successful. The club will sponsor Josephine and support her in raising the funds necessary for this amazing experience to occur. Congratulations Josephine, and we look forward to hearing more about your adventures next year.

SLC Report on Trivia Night

Last Friday night 31st May Exeter High School held a Silent Auction and Trivia Night to raise money for the Cambodia trip and our SLC. The night was hosted by Neve Ringk, Laura Turmine and Mr Stewart. The Trivia section consisted of eight rounds, with the Silent Auction happening throughout proceedings along with few fun games of heads or tails. The night was a huge success providing those in attendance with a fun but very competitive evening. At the end of the evening one of the teacher’s teams once again ended up taking out first place. Thank you to everyone who came along to help support the upcoming Year 9/10 Cambodia Trip along with your continued support of the 2019 SLC.

City Park Radio Experience

On 30th May three Grade 9 students were thrown into the world of radio where they presented a show on City Park Radio’s ‘School’s Out’ program. The rest of the grade 9 Drama Club, along with their teacher Mrs Parish helped them to write and develop a 30 minute segment promoting Exeter High School, the programs/events offered, accompanied by our own choice of music.

It was an amazing and fun experience! It made us realise that radio is a complicated job and it can be quite easy to make small mistakes (e.g. saying ‘One trivia year a night’ instead of ‘One trivia night a year’.) The entire Drama Club recommends the experience and we are looking forward to our second show on Thursday 20th June where we will be conducting live interviews with staff and a fellow student. If you would like to listen to our first show please go to our Exeter High School Facebook page. Tune into Launceston City Park Radio on 103.7 FM, 96.5 FM or by live stream on the link below in week 8

What’s happening in the Art department?

Year 9/10 Visual Art students have been working on developing their knowledge of composition using bones. Here are what some of our creative students have designed.

Congratulations Merran

Grade 10 student Merran recently participated in the Tasmanian Band League competitions. Merran had a fantastic time at the competitions winning the Junior Flute/Piccolo section with a total of 92 points. Merran’s results at these competitions won her the Junior Woodwind Champion of Champions Award.

Rotary Youth Exchange Program – Through Josephine’s eyes

The Rotary Youth Exchange is an amazing opportunity that I am so glad to be a part of. I always had a passion for travelling and exploring the world but I was particularly inspired after hearing stories of my cousin Matthew’s adventures around the globe and I just couldn’t wait to start my own.

After talking to my mum about it, I Googled exchange student and soon found a link to the Rotary Youth Exchange. After filling out an expression of interest form I waited anxiously for an email. The very next day I received an email thanking me for my expression of interest and that I could move on to the next stage, which required more paperwork to be filled out. Not long after sending those in I spoke to Liz about my concerns and questions that I had and filled out more paper work that was sent through. A part of the programme is to have a sponsor Rotary Club and I am incredibly grateful that the West Tamar Rotary Club is sponsoring me. This means that they help me fundraise for my year overseas. I’ll get to work alongside them to achieve the goal of $20, 000. The next step for me is to attend the selection day held on the 16th June. This day is incredibly important as it selects the outbound students for 2020. I am so amazed that I have even progressed this far into the process and hopefully this time next year I will be studying abroad.

Exeter High is participating in this promotion again in 2019. Please send in your stickers and help us reach our goal.
