Principal’s Report
Mr Lendvay and Mr Clarke recently took a group of our students to Tasmania All Schools Mountain biking Championships in Glenorchy. Once again, our students represented our school with pride and competed with both a determination to win whilst also displaying the attributes of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Thank you to Mr Lendvay and Mr Clarke for organising this event for our students and accompanying them to Hobart for the day. Like school camps or the upcoming trip to Cambodia, these events cannot go ahead without the commitment of our amazing staff.
As part of the lunchtime Drama Club run at Exeter High School, grade 9 students have the opportunity to develop and present an afternoon show on Launceston City Park Radio – School’s Out program. Studio sessions for Exeter High School will be on Thursday 30th May and Thursday 20th June. Students will be writing, developing and presenting their own 28 minute segment promoting Exeter High School and the programs/events that we offer. Parents and friends are invited to listen to the broadcast on 103.7FM, 96.5FM and streaming around the world at:
http://www.cityparkradio.com/
Please tune into these segments as I am sure our students will do us proud as they showcase and celebrate what we do here at Exeter High.
NAPLAN testing has been completed and I was impressed with the way our students applied themselves to their tasks throughout the testing period. I will have the results of this year’s NAPLAN testing to share with the school community later in the year. Thank you to Mrs Robinson and Mr Shorter for preparing our school to conduct the tests online for the first time.
Last week’s social was another huge success and I would like to congratulate Mr Stewart and his SLC team for organising the event. A reminder however, that if a student is away from school on the day of the social for illness, they are not permitted to attend that evening’s event.
Winter Sport has commenced and reports from our coaches are that our teams are working well together, using training sessions to improve and most importantly, Exeter High School’s sporting teams are reflecting our school values of Respect, Acceptance, Maturity and Learning.
Grade 10 student Korey Izard has been a part of the Student Works program over the past 4 terms and we recently received some amazing feedback about the mature approach Korey has towards all of the tasks that he undertakes at Student Works.
The Chairperson, staff and visitors at Student Works were very impressed with Korey, some feedback received about him and his efforts included:
“very mature”; “spoke well and with enthusiasm about being at Student Works”; he put the function at Student Works as a priority; “a delightful young man”; “showed caring qualities toward assisting another student”; “interacted with those in attendance extremely well”;
Congratulations Korey, you are a credit to your family and our school.

Tasmanian All Schools MTB 2019

For the first time in its history, Exeter High School sent a team of mountain biking superstars to the All Schools MTB Championships, which were held in Hobart on Friday the 10th of May.
Our team of nine were fully committed, having to be at school before 6am on a Friday to get on the bus, which was expertly driven by Mr Lendvay on route to the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park.
With over 500 entries from schools across Tasmania, our students had every right to feel nervous, especially when we arrived at the event and were greeted by a sea of competitors, bikes and spectators.
The first event of the morning was the Under 15s men’s race, in which we were represented by Ben Hockey, Jesse Kerkham, Ashley Carr, William Hay and Matthew Lane. These five riders were outstanding in a field of 190, with the start, in particular, being chaotic. Their results will be listed at the end of the article.
The next event was the Under 17 men’s race, where we had two riders, Josh Wynwood and Darby Whiting. These two riders showed their capabilities in a very experienced field, and despite being lapped by a potential Australian representative, performed very strongly.
We were then represented by the Ringk sisters in the Under 15 and Under 17 females’ race, with both Neve and Aimee showing their skills by riding at the front end of their respective fields. The highlight of the day was Neve’s 6th place finish which was a tremendous result.
All of our students should be commended for their behaviour on the day, as they not only rode with determination and class, but they all acted respectfully of other competitors throughout the event.
Thank you to Mr Lendvay for his organisation of the day, and his bike tying on skills, as well as Mr Carr and Ms Adamson-Ringk who helped and supported our team throughout the day.
We are already looking forward to putting a team together for next year, which will be held in Launceston (fingers crossed!). That gives everyone 12 months of training and practice time if you would like to be involved in this terrific event.
Results were as follows:

Chaplain Update
Hi all,
It’s hard to believe that the first term is completed, holidays done and dusted and that we are into week 4 of term 2 already! The weeks and months have absolutely flown by.
So, what has been happening for the new Chaplain at Exeter High School?
My days at Exeter are Monday, Wednesday and Friday with Breakfast Club on Monday and Wednesday’s with the help of the Student Leaders and some wonderful volunteers from local churches getting involved. This has seen a number of regulars and steady growth over the term with many of the same students turning out for toast, Milo, fruit and juice to get them off to a good start.
The last Wednesday of term 1 saw a special breakfast of Muffins with bacon and eggs on offer for the whole school which I know was greatly appreciated by all. We saw 120 muffins go to staff and students in a short 30mins with the wonderful contribution of helpers from within the school and from the local church community, it was a huge success.
Recess times are UNO time, and I’ve had a regular group of kids that come into the office and spend time playing games of UNO and chatting about their day/week.
This has been another great way of building relationship with students and making connections.
Monday lunchtime I spend kicking the footy, which I’m pretty average at, with a small group of kids, which has been great fun.
Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes tend to be a bit more free-range in that I just wait to see what happens and interact with that. This can lead to games in the office or hanging out in the undercover area chatting to students.
The staff at Exeter High have been fantastic and really supportive, allowing me to join in on lessons and assist with students who might need a little bit of extra help.
This has given me an opportunity to see just how hard the teachers and staff at the school work and offer encouragement and support where it’s needed.
On the first week of term 2, May 1,2 and 3 I had the opportunity to attend the Grade 7 camp with staff and students. It was a fantastic time to get to know the grade 7 staff and students in a more relaxed setting.
May 26th to June 2nd is Chaplaincy week which is an opportunity to shine a light on what chaplains do in the community.
There are not only Chaplains in many schools across the state but also in Hospitals, Aged Care Facilities and available to our ADF Personnel, Emergency Care Workers & Volunteers for emotional, minor psychological and spiritual care (regardless of spiritual persuasion).
One thing you can be certain of is that a Chaplains role is not to convert people to a religion but, rather to offer help and support within the community and a listening ear in times of stress or difficulty. Our role is to ensure that you are not going through difficult times alone and to celebrate any ‘life’ victories with you.
If you have any questions about what a school chaplain does or would just like to touch base for a chat so you can get to know me, please contact me at the school during school hours on Monday, Wednesday or Friday, I would love to meet you and I really enjoy a good coffee
Lastly, I would like to give a shout out to the Caring Network and Colin Bailey and his hard working group of volunteers, who have been such a wonderful support and encouragement to myself and the Breakfast Club. Their provision of bread for toast and financial contribution to the school is appreciated beyond words.

Cross Country/Fitness Training
In the lead up to our school cross country carnival which will be held on Friday 7th June, all HPE classes will be undertaking some intensive training in both their Health and PE lessons during weeks 4-6 (starting next week). Students will be required to bring a change of gear for both lessons each week along with drink bottles and asthma medication if needed.
This is a major unit in the HPE curriculum and students will be assessed as much on their attitude and effort to improve as their overall fitness. Different fitness levels will be catered for with extension tasks for those who are aspiring to inter-high representation.
Health and PE lessons are as follows:
