Principal’s Report

Today we celebrated our annual school ANZAC Assembly which was hosted by the 2019 School Leadership Council. I was so impressed with the way these students hosted this assembly in such a dignified and respectful manner. Our students also showed immense respect in the way they entered the assembly and also conducted themselves throughout this important event in a highly dignified manner. SLC representatives will also be speaking at the Dawn and 11.00am service at Exeter and at the 11.00am service at Beaconsfield and I look forward to attending the Exeter service and hope to see as many students and families as possible to commemorate this important event.

I would like to publicly thank Mr Glenn Landeg who has replaced Mr Peter Page this term in the MDT department. Mr Page has decided to retire from teaching and he will be replaced next term by Mr Steve Harvey. Mr Harvey has visited the school already and was impressed with the way our students apply themselves to their learning and the way in which they warmly welcomed him. We look forward to Mr Landeg continuing to work at Exeter High School in a relief teaching capacity.

As I mentioned earlier, Mr Page has decided to retire and Mr Hollingsworth, our School Business Manager has also retired from the Education Department. Mr Peter Page moved to Exeter High School in January of 2004. Prior to this he was at Prospect High School. He had been involved with the Education Department for 35 Years. Mr David Hollingsworth has been with Exeter High since July of 2006. I wish them both a wonderful time over the coming years as they embark on the next chapters of their lives and thank them both for the work they have done over the years at Exeter High School.

Thank you to all of our wonderful staff who have supported our students over the past term and ensured 2019 begun in such a positive manner. I would also like to wish all of our students and families a safe and happy Easter and holiday break and look forward to seeing everyone back at the start of Term 2 on Monday 29 April.

Inter-high Swimming Carnival 2019

On Friday 29th March, Mrs Fox and Mr Stewart had the pleasure of escorting 43 students to the Launceston Aquatic Centre for the Division 1 Inter-high Swimming Carnival. What a fantastic day! Despite being the smallest contingent to ever represent the school, we were so proud of the way our students embraced the team spirit and willingly “stepped up” to cover races for their team-mates when required. Whilst this was only needed on five occasions, it proved pivotal in securing our overall 3rd placing.

We found ourselves sitting next to the Riverside team in the grandstand – again – but were able to hold our heads high when we won the very first race of the day. Taylor Raine went on to break the Division 1 record for the Grade 10 Girls 50m Freestyle and Georgia Woods claimed the Grade 10 Girls 50m Breastroke record. By the end of the day, Exeter High had recorded 15 first places and 38 podium finishes from the 80 events on offer. Not bad for a school of less than 300 students!

Congratulations to our Grade 7/8 swimmers who came fifth in the junior shield against some strong competition and our seniors who claimed second place. An awesome effort Team Exeter!

Grade 7 My Education Day

On Thursday 28th March the whole of grade 7 put time tabled classes aside to focus on some different learning. Lesson 1 was centred around anti-bullying, breaking down what constitutes bullying, creating class definitions and pledging to wipe bullying out of our grade by signing certificates and creating ‘leaves’ for our grade tree in the open area (as seen behind the students in the photo). The focus for lesson 2 was Valuing Diversity where students discussed feeling and emotions and were given the chance to put their own feelings into words. After lunch we took over the student centre to experience multiple activities that had been modified to allow people with disabilities to play. Activities such as goal ball, wheel chair volleyball and blindfolded obstacle courses were attempted by all students. It was a fantastic day and students participated in some valuable learning throughout the day.

Grade 8 SRC

Liam, Maddison, Hannah, Paige and Seth

Congratulations to our 5 successful students in the Grade 8 Student Representative Council. These students have been elected by their peers to represent the grade and will work alongside the other grade SRC and SLC throughout the year, assisting with fundraisers, social events and celebration assemblies while continuing to build on their leadership skills. Well done

7B Ag Excursion to Pure Foods Egg Farm

Year 7 students have been studying Poultry in Agricultural Studies. In this unit students have worked in pairs and have been tasked with raising their own chick, they have been responsible for monitoring their feed and water along with recording weekly weight gains. Students have also developed their knowledge of caring for laying hens and carrying out the school egg enterprise.

Last week students visited Pure Foods egg farm at their Longford site, the tour involved analysing the production systems used, cage and free range. The final assessment task for the unit involves creating an A-3 sized poster and a 2 minute class presentation to develop other people’s understanding about how our eggs are produced at Pure Foods egg farm.

From the Nurses Desk

The first term break will be here next week, for some having the extra time to spend with our children over the break is a welcome opportunity. Others may find it challenging, confusing and or troubling and raise concerns regarding their child.

When a parent recognises a teenager needs help, they’re more likely to get it. That’s why Reach Out Australia – the country’s leading online mental health organisation for young people has introduced a free new service to help parents help teenagers. Free and available 24/7, ReachOut.com/Parent.

https://parents.au.reachout.com/

This service provides evidence-based practical support and tips that encourage effective communication and relationships between parents and young people aged 12–18 years, as well as easy-to-read information on a range of mental health and wellbeing issues. The service features more than 140 fact sheets, stories, practical tips and tools, and also provides access to an online community forum so that parents can connect with each other to share experiences in an anonymous, supportive space.

Don’t forget if you have any health concerns or queries you can always make an appointment to see David Mackay the school health nurse at Exeter High every Wednesday.

Cheers Dave
