Principal’s Report

The past two weeks have been tremendously busy here at Exeter High School. This Wednesday night saw the school social held with a theme of Op Shop clothing being worn by students and some staff. Once again, the behaviour of our students was exceptional and I would also like to congratulate the Student Leadership Council for organising the event and also thank the staff who supervised the social.

Miss Macpherson and her team of Grade 10 bakers held the annual Cup Cake Day last Friday to raise funds for the RSPCA. This was a huge effort and the group should be proud of their efforts as nearly $700 was raised on the day.

Parents, staff and students have all had the opportunity to complete a School Satisfaction Survey. I look forward to sharing the results of the survey in the coming months and we will certainly use this feedback to shape our decisions for next year and beyond.

Our future Grade 7 students attended an Options Taster day here on Tuesday 21 August where they sampled subjects such as Cooking, Art, Drama and MDT. These days are a wonderful opportunity for students to sample what life will be like when they make the transition to high school. Thank you to Mrs Parish and Mr Lendvay for organising this opportunity.

Science has been a massive focus in the past few weeks here at Exeter High. Mr Finnigan organised a hugely successful Science Day for our Grade 5/6 students from Exeter and Beaconsfield Primary Schools last Tuesday. Students from the primary schools participated in various experiments and our Grade 9 students led the investigations on the day which reflected the high levels of maturity our students display. We also had our Grade 8 students participate in a science expo last week where young scientists from various fields within Tasmania visited the school to discuss possible career options with students.

Young Tassie Scientists visit to Grade 8

Last Tuesday, the year 8 students were privileged to have three Young Tassie Scientists give talks to the whole grade about their research. The Young Tassie Scientists (YTS) program aims to broaden the profile of science and engineering to students and the general public throughout Tasmania and to provide insights into working as a scientist or engineer. Nicole is an Antarctic scientist who studies krill, specifically, the makeup of the oil found in krill which is used as an Omega 3 substitute. Katherine is a scientist who studies the effects of food choices on brain health. The students had a lot of fun blind tasting some of the interesting foods! The third scientist, Adele, is a research chemist and loves to blow things up! All of the students were very engaged and benefited from the exposure to different types of sciences. Thanks must go to the YTS program and to the grade 8 team for allowing the disruption to their core lessons.

RSPCA Cupcake Day

Friday 24th August saw year 10 students participate in the RSPCA Cupcake Day for the last time. It has been an ongoing fundraiser since they were in year 7 and each year the students have raised significant amounts of money. This year they raised $672.83 which was a combination of cupcakes and a free dress day. A huge congratulations to everyone involved. A special mention to Jo Jones and Claire Heald for their help, it certainly wouldn’t have run as smoothly as it did without your assistance.

Excursions for HPE based options on Wednesday afternoons

2018 Tailrace to Royal Park Fitness-based Excursion

On Wednesday 12th September, students enrolled in the NHSSA Sport Options and the Senior PE Extended class will attend an excursion to engage in fitness-based activities from Tailrace to Royal Park and optional ball sports at Royal Park.

Students will travel by bus from Exeter High (departing at 1.00pm) to Tailrace and split into 3 graded group (based on fitness levels, preparation and engagement):

Group A will run from Tailrace, up the Zig-zag track and back down the other side of the Gorge to finish at Royal Park.

Group C will walk along the footpath from Tailrace to finish at Royal Park.

There will be a staff member with each group and two additional staff to negate numbers for a larger group and to have a staff member wearing a high-visibility vest stationed at the bridge to ensure all students cross safely to access the Zig-zag track.

Students can participate in some ball sport activities at Royal Park before returning by bus to school. Students will be back on-site by 3.05pm.

Any students who wish to be collected from Royal Park will need to have a written note and arrange for their parent/guardian to speak with an EHS staff member at the collection point before they will be permitted to leave with that person.
