Principal’s Report

Last Thursday, 31st May Mr Finnigan took a group of Grade 9/10 students to the annual Science and Engineering Challenge at the University of Tasmania. Our students were awarded third place and were also commended on their outstanding behaviour, the sense of pride they displayed in our school through the way they applied themselves and also how fantastic they looked in their uniforms. This was an excellent opportunity for our students to work in a new environment and also be exposed to the University and what it has to offer.

In staffing news, it is with great pleasure that I can announce that Mrs Jo Robinson recently won the Advanced Skills Teacher role here at Exeter High. Mrs Robinson is an exceptional teacher and this role will also allow her to continue the outstanding work she has been undertaking as a leader within our school.

I would also like to publicly acknowledge and thank all of the amazing volunteers who work on the school farm. These people volunteer many hours both during school days, as well as weekends to both help maintain the farm and support our students at such events as cattle handling competitions.

We also have had the privilege of hosting Reggie Dabbs who is a motivational speaker from the United States of America. Reggie has worked with various organisations as a guest speaker and last Wednesday, he spoke to our students and staff about always staying positive and being resilient in life. This was a fantastic opportunity for our school and I would like to thank our School Chaplain, Robin Shearer for organising the visit.

Science and Engineering Challenge 2018

The Science and Engineering Challenge is an Australia-wide competition instigated by the University of Newcastle to encourage high school students to consider careers in fields of Science and Engineering. This year’s Challenge was held at the University of Tasmania’s Newnham campus on Thursday 31st May. Our heroic team was invited to do battle against eight other schools and consisted of thirty year 9 and 10 students, ably assisted by Mr Pratap. The Challenge consists of 4 half-day and 4 full-day activities that are designed to test the thinking, construction and teamwork skills of each student. There are always comments from students about each activity stating that “it is harder than it looks!” Although puzzling, sometimes frustrating, the Challenge is always fun. Our students represented our school with pride and performed admirably, obtaining a credible third placing out of the eight participating schools. Fantastic job everyone!

EHS Big Freeze

Thank you to all the staff and students who supported the Exeter High School Big Freeze on Friday 1st June. It was great to see a huge number of people in beanies throughout the day and impressive crowd that turned up and tried their luck to win the chance to tip cold water over some of our SLC and staff members. The day was very successful and as a result we will be making a donation to the fight against MND.

COMMUNITY CORNER

West Tamar Councils Parks and Playground Survey

West Tamar Council has a variety of Parks in the municipality, ranging from parks with little or no equipment to parks with lots of equipment and activities. It is important to remember that not all parks can have everything. This survey is to assist council with future planning.

To survey: https://goo.gl/forms/kWPThDjTtBbuoZTx2
To Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WestTamarCouncil/
To website: http://www.wtc.tas.gov.au/

Council is hoping to get as many surveys completed as possible so that the youth and parents voices are heard in regards to future planning of parks/playgrounds in the West Tamar Municipality.

The survey will run until the end of June. I will arrange a time to collect, should you require more surveys please contact me.
