Principal’s Report

It’s hard to believe that we are already at the end of Term 1 and what an amazing term it has been here at Exeter High School. Being the end of Term, I think it is timely to remind parents about how important it is for students to attend school every day of each Term. I cannot stress enough how much extended absences from school affect a student’s ability to succeed both in an academic sense but also when they leave school and seek employment. As a school, we are now sending out postcards to parents when their child has prolonged absences. This is to encourage parents to contact Mr Stevenson at the school to see what other strategies we can put in place to support the re-engagement of any students who have been absent.

As Mrs Robinson has reported in this week’s newsletter, our swim team was placed second at the recent Inter-High swimming carnival. This is an absolutely outstanding effort considering that of all the schools competing, we have the smallest student population. Another highlight was the large number of parents who were there to cheer on our team. Thank you to our swim team and their parents for once again showing the wider community just how amazing our school culture is.

We held a whole school My Education day last Thursday where students across the school spent the day looking at the skills, qualities and attributes that employers are looking for in employees. Students also worked on creating resumes and building their capacity to work as a part of a team and develop their critical thinking skills – these are both qualities and attributes that we will continually develop with our students as we prepare them for life beyond school.

I would like to thank the parents who attended our recent Parent/Teacher interview sessions. I would encourage as many parents as possible to come in to meet their child’s teachers and have a discussion about the progress they are making at the mid-year interviews.

Grade 7/8 Girls T20 Blast Gala Day

Thursday 5 April 2018

Exeter High School once again entered a team in the Northern High Schools 7/8 Girls T20 Blast Gala day, with our team making the semi-finals before a narrow loss to an experienced St Patrick’s outfit.

We were represented by an excited bunch of cricketers, who all did an outstanding job given some of them had never played cricket before.

Our first game was against Kings Meadows and we started nervously, batting first and ticking the scoreboard over with a number of well-placed shots. We were then able to restrict the Kings Meadows batters, and were able to take a number of wickets which saw us run out victors, led by all round efforts from Daizi Blundstone and Rebecca Edwards.

The semi-final was a hard fought affair, with a number of highlights including Chelsea Wynne-Allen taking a superb one handed catch off her own bowling, as well as Jasmine Russell saving a certain six with a well-timed leap to take another fine catch at square leg. Unfortunately we lost wickets at regular intervals which saw us fall short of the target.

Our final match saw us pitted against another Kings Meadows team, and with Maddison Dunn and Katie Grant-De Haan smashing sixes everywhere we were off to a flyer. Our batting was consistent throughout, and when Hayley Bingley, Jaime Smith and Jenna Griffiths bowled with real pace and venom the Kings Meadows batters were unable to score the required runs.

Thanks to all of the girls who put their hands up to play cricket this year, we had tremendous numbers and everyone was enthusiastic and keen to give their best effort.
