PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

I am very proud of everything that we do here at Exeter High School. Visiting classrooms daily I am continually impressed by the quality of teaching and learning that I observe schoolwide. I wish to commend all students embracing our focus on orderly learning classroom by being a learner and being respectful. Respect is an important human characteristic, and it is an expectation that all member of the Exeter High School Community show respect for each other and respect for themselves.
We are thrilled to share some wonderful news in this fortnight’s newsletter! We are excited to announce the successful installation of our new swings! The students have enthusiastically embraced this addition to our playground, and it has quickly become a favorite spot during recess. Seeing our students enjoy this new recreational equipment brings so much joy to our school community.
The redevelopment of our school is progressing smoothly and is well on track to be completed by September. This project will create modern 21st-century learning environments that will enhance our students' educational experiences. We can’t wait to unveil these new spaces that will foster creativity and collaboration among our students.
Our students have been engaged in an array of exciting activities lately! From hands-on dissections to participating in insightful industry talks, they are truly exploring the world around them. Recently, students have also attended college presentations and secured work placements that provide real-world experience. Additionally, our young mathematicians have been showcasing their skills in various classroom activities. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and the dedication they show in all their endeavours.
Students attending school every day is so important for their social and intellectual development. Research has proven that when students attend school all day and every day, they achieve much better results and give themselves a greater chance of a successful future. School helps students build important life skills such as teamwork, communication and resilience along with developing their academic understanding. Parents need to be aware as well that it is a legal requirement that students attend school. Under the law you must make sure that your child attends school every day unless you have a reasonable explanation. It is very important that you don’t keep you child away from school for minor reasons. You can expect Exeter High School to do the following: -
¨ Monitor student attendance.
¨ The office will communicate every time your child is absent from school.
¨ We will follow up on any unexplained absences.
¨ Provide students with real-life authentic experiences to engage them in their learning.
¨ Work with you around strategies to encourage your child to come to school.
It is important that if your child is absent from school, you contact the office and provide a reason. If you have any problems getting your child or children to school, please contact us for advice or support.
Thank you for your continued support, and here’s to many more exciting updates in the future!

Students have been loving the new outdoor space – making the most
of it during class and break times throughout the day.

INTER-HIGH CROSS COUNTRY
Our school had a fantastic day at the Inter-High Cross Country Carnival at Kings Meadows High School last week. Despite a wet and slippery track, our students showed great fitness and skill, achieving impressive results. Exeter once again proved we can hold our own against much larger Division 1 schools, with many Top 10 finishes. Our Year 8 girls placed 2nd overall in their pennant, and the Year 8 boys matched this with an equal 2nd place. Congratulations to all our students for their determination, sportsmanship, and excellent behaviour. A big thank you to Mrs Youd, Mr Towns, and Miss Beeton for organising and supporting our team.
A special mention to the following students who placed in the top 10 of their respective races

HANDS ON LEARNING (HoL)

Hands On Learning survived its first rainy day! The students learnt new skills in welding, basket weaving, crochet and mosaic-making. Some of these skills will be used in larger projects in the future. Students served up pasta for lunch, and we may have found a good spot to work on a mural over winter.
1000 HEARTS VISIT

We had a special visit from Sarah De Jonge, the founder of 1000 Hearts, a global kindness community.
Sarah spent time with a group of our students, teaching them how to hand-stitch pocket hearts. These small hearts are made to be shared with others to spread and celebrate kindness. Everyone loved making the hearts and learning how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
We’re excited to work with 1000 Hearts this year and see where this kindness journey takes us - we look forward to sharing it with you.
YEAR 9 SCIENCE
In Year 9 Science, students have been learning how our body systems work together, specifically the respiratory system and circulatory system. They recently completed a lung and heart dissection, looking at the structure of the lungs and how blood is pumped through the heart.

FORENSIC SCIENCE
Last week in Forensic Science, our Year 9/10 students stepped into the role of toxicologists. Students examined simulated ‘stomach contents’ from a murder victim to test for macromolecules - using the results to uncover where the victim last ate. A hands-on mystery with a scientific twist.

STUDENT WORK PLACEMENTS

Some of our students are currently undertaking Work Placement with Tas City Building, contributing to the redevelopment of our school. This authentic learning experience provides valuable first-hand insight into the construction industry, including both building and electrical work, on a real worksite. Annie and Sienna have already completed a week on site, whilst it is Brooke’s first week. Further students will be joining the site next week. A big thank you to Tas City Building for supporting this valuable program.

We have many students currently participating in work placements across various industries, and we look forward to sharing more updates with our school community in the coming weeks.
CANTEEN NEWS
Managing a school canteen requires a lot of research on suitable foods for schools. The traffic tight system is a guide to providing the right foods and how to prepare them for the school canteen’s menu. Foods are categorised into three groups, green, amber and red.
GREEN: The healthiest option, which contains the five food groups: fruit and vegetables, lean meats, wholegrains and dairy, low fat, no sugar or salt.
AMBER: Choose carefully, as these food items contain higher energy/kilojoules, fats, sugars and salt. Examples are some processed foods, sugary drinks and certain snacks.
RED: Items to avoid – deep fried goods, iced cakes/slices, chocolate, lollies, chips and ice creams. These are considered too high in sugars, fats and salt.
Our canteen menu has been reviewed and is continuously reviewed. Several items were deleted and healthier options added. New recipes and food items to include fruit and vegetables have been trialled and tested with great response.
The canteen’s confectionery lines have been halved, and healthier snacks provided.
Drinks available are mostly no sugar or low fat, with plenty of water in supply. At the start of Term 2, the price of a 600ml bottle of water was dropped to $1.00.
Your canteen will continue to educate and provide healthier foods to students and staff.
Go green by choosing healthier eats.
