PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As our 2024 school year draws to a close, I would like to thank all students, parents and guardians, staff, School Association, West Tamar Rotary and all community members who have contributed to Exeter High School this year.
It has been an absolute privilege to return to Exeter High School and serve as Principal.
Ben Frerk will return as substantive Principal next year, so I will return to my substantive position as Assistant Principal at Launceston College.
I would also like to acknowledge some of our amazing staff members who won’t be here at the start of 2025. Mrs Robinson and Mrs Wivell will both be taking some much-deserved LSL for term 1. Mr Fox will be undertaking an exciting AST role at Hagley Farm School in term 1 and we wish him all the best. Mr Clarke will be transferring to Launceston College and Mr Stewart to Queechy High in an AST role. Thank you to all these wonderful staff who have, in their own ways, contributed to the successes of our students. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday period and a successful 2025.

Graduation Assembly Speech
As Principal, and on behalf of the Exeter High School community, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our parents, family members, staff, invited guests, students and especially our 2024 Year10 and 12 graduates, to their final presentation assembly. I’m sure to many of the parents and even students, that it only seems like yesterday that the young adults currently in Year 10 who sit in front of me today, first entered the yards and classrooms here, back on Wednesday 3rd February 2021 and even further back on Wednesday February 6, 2019 for our Year 12 students. This is my second time here at Exeter High School, having left here in 2006, just one year before our Graduating Year 12 students were born!
It is absolutely wonderful to see so many of you here today as we celebrate and recognise the successes of our students. This assembly is our opportunity to reflect on the positive contributions we have all made to our school this year, celebrate many of our successes and honour our 2024 Leavers. Schools are always busy places and 2024 certainly has been an incredibly busy but exceptionally rewarding year. I can proudly say, we have had an exceptional year in so many different areas, including academic, sporting and artistic achievements as we continue to strive to be the absolute best we can be. Our 2024 NAPLAN and PAT data are something that I have been tremendously proud of and our outstanding results reflect the amazing work we continue to do here. These achievements by our students here at Exeter High School reflect the amazing community we are all a part of.
As always, the most important partnership we have though, is most certainly with our families. As a school underpinned by strong relationships, it is at our core to work alongside families to support the learning and development of every student and I thank all families for their support. These strong relationships allow each and every student the opportunity to grow both in an academic sense and on a personal level.
The Work Experience Program has continued to see a large number of our Year 9 and 10 students working with a myriad of businesses and support people to increase their skills and abilities. In 2024, this program has continued to be valuable, authentic and engaging learning opportunity, as well as forging strong working partnerships with all these businesses. Good luck to our numerous students who will transition from school-based work placements this year to entering the workforce on a full-time basis in 2025 across a number of vocational areas. We are very grateful for all the support we receive from businesses who support our students who undertake work placements throughout the year. A particularly strong partnership has been formed with TasCity Builders who have embraced this program, and this has led to many of our students actually working in a hands-on setting, helping with the actual redevelopment of our school. What a truly authentic experience for these students and we hope to continue this in 2025.
This major redevelopment will transform the teaching and learning spaces that our students and teachers will benefit from in the coming years. The way in which our amazing school had continued to operate at such high levels in the midst of these redevelopments is a testament to the calm and orderly learning environments we have created here at Exeter High School.
I would especially like to thank Mrs Parish, Dr Shorter, Mrs Pratap, Miss Bell, Mr Cooper and Mr Clarke for their ongoing guidance of our current Year 10 cohort, along with Mr Fox, Mr Finnigan and Mrs Yole for your support and guidance with the Year 12 students. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of all of the other teachers and staff who have supported and guided our current Year 10’s and 12’s over the past 6 years. I’m sure that each and every one of the graduating students sitting in front of me today would be able to identify at least one of our staff members who has been a significant adult in their lives.
Each one of you will forever be a part of Exeter High School. Keep in touch and dare to be the best you can be as you move forward with your lives “Towards the Future". Good luck with everything you choose to do in the future – aim high, accept that there will be challenges and always reflect on your time here at Exeter High School with fond memories.

SCHOOL REDEVELOPMENT UPDATE #5 Final for 2024

GRADE 8 DRAMA – CHILDRENS THEATRE PERFORMANCE

On Friday 6th December, Year 8 Drama students performed two Children’s Theatre plays, Onion Boy and Princesses Need Not Reply Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 from Exeter Primary School.
Onion Boy, by Debra Cole. Onion farming is the same day in and day out. After being warned about the challenges of the world, one young boy searches for adventure and discovers along the way that kindness truly does pay off.
Princesses Need Not Apply by Karleen Hayden. Loyal servant Mabel has sat by Prince Philander’s side for his cursed sleep of 100 years, waiting for the spell to be broken by a beautiful princess. Unfortunately, those who ‘apply’ are less than satisfactory. In the end, it is Mabel herself who must break this curse. This fractured fairy tale has a gender twist – a sleeping prince must be awakened by a princess.
Filled with humour and fresh twists on classic characters, these plays were highly entertaining and interactive. The Year 8 students dedicated countless hours to developing their characters, crafting background stories, writing and staging scenes, memorising lines, sourcing costumes and props, painting sets, and rehearsing.
Despite the initial nerves before the performance, the experience proved exhilarating once they took the stage. The younger children thoroughly enjoyed the show, engaging enthusiastically and asking many questions afterward. The Year 8 Drama students would like to extend their gratitude to the Exeter Primary School children for attending and being such an incredible audience.
