PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Minister Visit
We recently welcomed Minister Palmer back to our school. Minister Palmer was interested in meeting our Year 11 and 12 students before they finished the school year and visited the school farm to discuss future pathways with students. She also visited a Year 9 English class and heard about the strategies that we have in place to support the DECYP Reading Priority. This includes effective classroom teaching strategies for all students, and interventions for those students who require more support with their reading.
Thanks to Mr Fox, Mr Finnigan, Mrs Yole and Dr Shorter for facilitating the Minister’s visit.
Peace Pole Ceremony and Remembrance Day
Last Friday I attended the planting of a Peace Pole at Exeter Primary School, organised by Exeter Primary School, Exeter High School Interact Club, and Rotary. Thank you to everyone who was involved in this event, which reminds us of the importance of peace, and that we should never take it for granted.
It was very timely that this ceremony took place a few days after Remembrance Day, for which we observed a minute of silence. Remembrance Day marks the end of fighting on the Western Front on November 11, 1918. At the time, the anniversary was known as Armistice Day, in reference to the formal agreement the German leaders signed to end the war. The name was changed to Remembrance Day after World War II ended in 1945. It has since become a day to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have died since World War I.
Orientation Day
This past Wednesday saw our 2025 Year 7 students attend their Orientation Day here at Exeter High School. I was very impressed with the way our future Year 7 students participated in the lessons and activities that were organised for the day. We also held an information evening for parents/carers about what Year 7 will look like and it was great to have people along to ask questions and find out about the learning spaces that their children will be in next year. It is very exciting that our Year 7/8 Block redevelopment will be completed by then and our new Year 7s will have brand new facilities to start their learning journey at Exeter High School.
Year 7 is a big change for students and, as always, if any parents have any further questions about 2025, please contact the school to talk to one of our staff. Students were also handed an information pack at the end of Orientation Day to provide more information about what they can expect as they embark on their high school journey.
End of Year Activities
Even though we are nearing the end of another school year, it is vital that students continue attending every day and that they are participating in all learning experiences across all curriculum areas. We also have our end of year picnics coming up and students have had the expectations explained to them about what behaviours are needed in the coming weeks to be invited to these fun activities. There is lots to look forward to, but we expect business as usual in coming weeks to ensure that students are set up for a successful 2025.
In readiness for end of year activities, it is very important that students bring all the necessary permission forms back to allow them to attend these fun days.
