PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Thank you to families for the support and flexibility shown during the recent wet and windy weather. We hope that everyone now has power and is looking forward to pleasant Spring days.
Survey Time Reminder
A reminder that it is that time of year when we ask students, families and staff to complete DECYP surveys to inform our future direction at Exeter High School. Families have been provided with the link to complete the Family School Satisfaction Survey. The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential.
All families in our school received the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to schools.
Please contact us if you require any assistance. More information can be found here:
Thank you for taking the time to fill in this survey. We value your input and the possibility of working more closely with families.
Re-development Update
The 7/8 block is on schedule to be completed at the end of this year. We are now considering the furniture and fittings that we will require in each room, so that we can start the process of choosing what we would like and getting some quotes on how much this will cost. We want to be well ahead in this process so that we have completed, fully furnished and fitted rooms to start 2025.
2025 Student Leaders
Last week, I was privileged to sit in on part of the Year 9 Leadership Day, organised by Mrs Yole and the SLC. It was wonderful to see our Year 9 Leaders working together to solve problems and develop ideas for how we can improve our school. I am very confident that, as in 2024, we will be in very safe hands with our 2025 SLC.
Year 6 Options Days
We welcomed our Year 6s from Exeter Primary and Beaconsfield Primary last Thursday. Students had an engaging experience trying out MDT, Ag, Art and Cooking. These students have much to look forward to when they start in Year 7 next year as they will be able to use our new Art and Cooking areas and have a brand new Year 7 area as their core base.
Rock Challenge
Several of our school bands participated in the 2024 annual Rock Challenge at The Door of Hope on Friday night. This was an amazing opportunity and experience for these students to perform in front of such a large audience. Thank you to Mr Murfet for helping students prepare for and supporting them at the event.
NAPLAN Data
We recently received our 2024 NAPLAN school data, and it is pleasing that our Grade 9 mean scores were above similar schools for Numeracy, Reading, Writing and Grammar and Punctuation. This is a clear demonstration of the effort teachers and students are putting in to learning. Well done to all our Year 9 students.
Our teachers are currently doing some professional learning with our Quality Teaching Coach, David Shorter, to further refine and reflect upon the strategies that we are using to support students with their reading.
Every School Day Matters
A reminder again about the importance of regular attendance. Please contact us if you need support with this and let us know through return text the reasons when a student is absent. We may ask for a medical certificate for ongoing sickness related absences.

MY EDUCATION DAY
My Education at Exeter High School is a supportive and inclusive approach encouraging engagement and participation that inspires and guides students from Year 7 to Year 11, as they undertake a journey of discovery in identifying who they are and what they want to become. It supports students to identify their personal interests, values, strengths, opportunities and aspirations, and teaches them how to use this knowledge to make decisions about their future learning, work and life opportunities. A variety of activities were undertaken in each of the grades as part of the EHS My Education Day on Wednesday 4th September.
Year 7
The Year 7 students continued their work around building relationships and culture within the grade by rotating around a series of activities throughout the day. Students worked in small groups combining their knowledge in an alphabet category challenge; prepared and cooked pizzas in our newly opened kitchens; and viewed a short ‘Bluey’ episode before exploring the theme of change and unpacking strategies to cope with change when it occurs. After a challenging start to the week due to the weather, it was nice to have students back in class working together positively.
Year 8
The Term 3 Year 8 focus for My Education Day was around self-awareness and code switching. In lessons 1 and 2, students explored the importance of being self-aware and knowing how and when to code switch. They worked through a series of activities to unpack what self-awareness is and the impact it has on our daily lives. Students also identified different situations where code switching was required to effectively deal with different situations and interact appropriately with others while continuing to develop and grow into mature adults.
In lesson 3, students worked in groups to complete a series of challenges in an ‘Amazing Race’ to emphasise the importance of working together to achieve positive outcomes and to be successful.
Year 9
Year 9 students spent part of their day researching their future pathways by looking at different careers and required qualifications and prerequisites. One group spent their day with Mrs Yole pursuing a role as a leader of the school next year. Students also continued their English curriculum by analysing Lord of The Rings.
One group of students opted to spend their day with Mrs Yole pursuing a role as a member of the 2025 Student Leadership Council (SLC). For any student interested in pursuing a position with the SLC, the leadership course was compulsory. The group joining Mrs Yole was enthusiastic and approached the day with excellent ideas and plans for next year. They spent time with the current SLC, and each have a mentor to guide them for the remainder of the year and the application process. With 18 students participating, it is going to be an exciting few months selecting the leadership team, as each of the 18 students is equipped to take on the role and be a part of the 2025 SLC.
Year 10
Many activities were undertaken focussing on career pathways, student interests, identity, skills, and qualifications while exploring the My Futures and Careerify websites.
Students focussed on Year 11 and 12 requirements to attain their TCE points, ATAR scores and the process involved in VET expression of interest applications. They used the TCE Course Planner and TASC to begin plotting their Year 11 and 12 pathways.
Students held one on one discussions with representatives from Newstead College, Launceston College and the Northern Regional Partnership about subjects on offer at a college level and questions they might have in relation to these.
Students updated their Transition Plans, including subject choices ready for college enrolment days in Week 3 of Term 4.
UNIFORM
Thank you to families for ensuring that students are wearing their school uniform. This is an important part of students being a part of the Exeter High School community and something that we take pride in as a school. This is also a safety issue as we need to be able to identify who belongs here on school grounds and having students in full school uniform allows us to do this. School uniform also ensures equity amongst students in relation to what they wear to school. There is a range of uniform options for students to choose from and these are available from the school uniform shop during school days. We are also aware of the financial burdens that exist at times and can assist families with uniforms if needed. Please contact the school on 6394 4366 if assistance is needed.
If students are not in full school uniform despite assistance/uniform items being offered, they will be required to spend break times within the school library due to the safety issue mentioned before. Continued refusal to wear uniform will result in an internal suspension whereby the student will have their normal curriculum provision, but in a different grade classroom. Ongoing defiance will be treated like any other defiance and lead to an external suspension; however, we are confident students will comply with these expectations.
We really appreciate the ongoing support of parents who send their children in full school uniform, helping to uphold the high expectations we have here at Exeter High School.
