PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome to Term 3.
We hope everyone had a restful and happy holiday and that all students are prepared for a positive and productive term, with warmer weather and longer days hopefully not too far away. We are also excited that the first phase of the redevelopment will be completed this term and look forward to sharing more progress soon.
Attendance - Every school day matters.
Regular attendance (i.e. 90% and above) is encouraged to maximise learning opportunities. Our attendance rate is currently 77.5%, but it is pleasing that during the first 2 weeks of term there have been some improvements in attendance and explanation of absences.
If your child is unwell, they need to stay home. However, if your child is well enough to attend school, they should be at school. Every day, Monday to Friday. Exeter High School monitors attendance closely. Please let the office know when your child will be absent.
The reality of missing school is not good. Data shows us that regular school attendance is one of the best things a child can do to set them up for success. But if they don’t attend, things get harder for them. Data shows that:
- If your child misses even just one day a fortnight, that adds up to 20 days of the school year. That’s the same as missing four whole weeks of school for the year.
- If they miss one day a week, that doubles to eight weeks of the school year they will miss nearly a term of learning!
- Over the course of their childhood, this would equate to two and a half ears of vital education they will never receive.
The data also tells us the better a child’s attendance rate, the better their future will be, and they will experience more opportunities.
School is where they learn and grow alongside their friends, and where they benefit the most. By going to school, students have academic success, but also build important social skills, routines, relationships and confidence.
By helping your child regularly attend school you are setting them up with good habits for life.
If your child is struggling to get to school, help is available. Please contact the school to discuss.
Uniform
Thank you to families for ensuring that students are wearing their school uniform. This is an important part of students being a part of the Exeter High School community and something that we take pride in as a school. This is also a safety issue as we need to be able to identify who belongs here on school grounds and having students in full school uniform allows us to do this. School uniform also ensures equity amongst students in relation to what they wear to school. There is a range of uniform options for students to choose from and these are available from the school uniform shop during school days. We are also aware of the financial burdens that exist at times and can assist families with uniforms if needed. Please contact the school on 6394 4366 if assistance is needed.
If students are not in full school uniform despite assistance/uniform items being offered, they will be required to spend break times within the school library due to the safety issue mentioned before. Continued refusal to wear uniform will result in an internal suspension whereby the student will have their normal curriculum provision, but in a different grade classroom. Ongoing defiance will be treated like any other defiance and lead to an external suspension; however, we are confident students will comply with these expectations.
We really appreciate the ongoing support of parents who send their children in full school uniform, helping to uphold the high expectations we have here at Exeter High School. Included in this newsletter is an example of the uniform items that are acceptable.
Exeter Excellence Awards
The Exeter Excellence awards are something that every student should be aspiring to achieve during their time here at Exeter High School. To all of the students who have earned one of these awards, congratulations and to everyone else, please set yourself a personal goal of receiving one of these awards in the time you have remaining here at Exeter High School. Also, make sure you keep these awards as a record of your achievement. When you are applying for part time jobs, employers really value seeing such awards as they tell the employer that this person is someone who would be a valuable contributor to their business.
NAPLAN Results
NAPLAN results for Year 7 and Year 9 students who sat NAPLAN in March are being posted this week. NAPLAN helps:
- teachers to better identify students who need extension or extra support.
- schools to identify strengths and areas of need on teaching programs.
- schools to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
- school systems to review programs and support offered to schools
Please let us know if you have any queries about NAPLAN.
Validation Forms
We are updating our records and there are a number of student validation forms that have not been returned. If we do not have this up-to-date information it impacts on emergency contacts, medical conditions, minor/major excursion and photo permissions. Please can you return any outstanding validation forms and do not hesitate to contact the school office on 6394 4366 if you need any assistance with this.
Bullying No Way
Exeter High School is participating in Bullying No Way: National week of action 12 - 16 August 2024.
