PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
As we near the end of another successful term, I would like to thank all our students, staff and families for their work and support. The term has been extremely busy and productive, and students have been given numerous opportunities to enhance their learning and wellbeing. It has been rewarding to see students taking pride in their learning and making some pleasing progress. This week it has been my absolute pleasure to watch our Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 Celebration Assemblies. Congratulations to all students who received awards, to parents and carers for supporting these events and to our staff for making them happen.
A highlight for me this term is that while we have had disruption due to our redevelopment and are essentially operating out of half of our site, the school continues to be a calm and settled environment, and this allows our teachers and students to go about their core business of teaching and learning in an uninterrupted manner. Over the past week alone, I have had the privilege of going into classrooms where our students have been engaged in learning about the use of linocut in Art, the structure and function of the cell in science, developing a missing scene for Matilda in English, and making a wooden boardgame in Woodwork. I have also visited the farm, where our Year 11/12 students have been busy doing some fencing. It is a pleasure to see the engaging activities our teachers have planned and are delivering and the way our students are committed to their learning due to the outstanding work of our teachers and teacher assistants.
UNIFORM
As the cold weather is well and truly upon us, I would like to remind our parents that we are able to support families in the purchasing of uniform items where necessary. Hoodies are not a part of our uniform and must not be worn under uniforms. We have a range of warm items available to students and these can be purchased through our school administration team. Please can I also ask that if families have items of uniform that they are able to donate, then to please pass them onto us. We are very appreciative of any contributions.
FREEZE MND
Today the SLC hosted an event to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease. Several staff and students volunteered themselves to be dunked with a bucket of ice water during a freezing Tassie winters day for our Freeze MND event. The event was a success, with valuable funds raised to go towards finding a cure for this awful disease. This year, the SLC was worked on building culture within the school, and seeing students from all grades sporting their team colours and cheering on as the ice buckets were tipped shows just how much the culture has grown already. Thank you to the West Tamar Rotary Club and members of the EHS Interact Club for assisting the SLC and Mrs Yole with a BBQ on the day.
GRADE 10 MOCK INTERVIEWS
Last week, I was honoured to participate as a panel member for Grade 10 mock interviews. It was very pleasing to see the preparation that students had put into their resumes and the thoughtful way in which they answered the interview questions. I am sure that they would agree that this was a very valuable experience. Thank you to Mrs Parish and all the volunteers who gave their time to support this. Feedback from the volunteers reinforced the impeccable way that our students conduct themselves interacting with community members.
NATIONAL NAIDOC WEEK
I would like to acknowledge National NAIDOC Week, which falls in the school holiday. Celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year to recognise and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for all Australians to acknowledge the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and their contributions to our society. This year’s theme, "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud", celebrates resilience and pride in Indigenous identities. It commemorates the rich and multifaceted cultures of Australia's First Nations peoples and the importance of preserving heritage, language, and identity for future generations.
PAT CRONIN FOUNDATION
This week, we had the Pat Cronin Foundation talk to our Year 9/10 students about the dangers of a ‘coward punch’. This is a very sensitive issue, and it is one that our young people need to be aware of as they transition into young adulthood.
REDEVELOPMENT PICTORIAL UPDATE – JULY 2024
Everything progressing nicely in Year 7 / 8 and kitchen areas.
YEAR 10 MOCK INTERVIEWS
On Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th June, Year 10 students underwent the Mock Interview process. We sat before a panel of interviewers and were questioned as though in a real interview. This helped students become familiar with the process of undergoing an interview and eased the potential fear or uncertainty regarding the process.
The interviewers were incredibly welcoming, and it was a stress-free process. Valuable feedback was given, and each student will be able to take it on board and continue to improve their resumes and interviewing skills. It certainly was an enlightening experience. We’d like to thank all those people from the community who gave up their valuable time to help us go through this incredibly important process.

DRAMA PRESENTATION – THE WICKED PRINCE
On Tuesday 25th June and Friday 28th June, Year 8 Drama students performed a 30-minute Children’s Theatre play, The Wicked Prince, to Year 1 to 6 students from Exeter Primary School.
The Wicked Prince is a funny and interactive play by Bob Johnson. After being disowned by his kind parent, ‘The Wicked Prince,’ (yes, that’s his name), decides that he will become king of four other kingdoms by making four different princesses fall in love with him and marry him. With the help of his not-so-funny jester and a bottle of love potion, Wicked Prince sets out on an adventure in an attempt to become king of Kingdoms One, Two, Three and Four. Needless to say, things don’t turn out as he expects them to.
Packed with humour and fresh takes on classic characters, this was a thoroughly entertaining play. Many hours were spent developing characters, creating background scenarios, writing, blocking scenes, memorising lines, sourcing costumes/props, painting sets and rehearsing.
Although it was nerve wracking waiting to perform, once things were underway, it was an exhilarating experience for the Grade 8 students. The children thoroughly enjoyed the performance and asked many questions at the end of it. The grade 8 Drama students would like to thank the Exeter Primary School children for attending and being such a fantastic audience.
