PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
This past Wednesday saw our 2024 Year 7 students attend their Orientation Day here at Exeter High School. I was very impressed with the way our future Year 7 students participated in the lessons and activities that were organised for the day. We also held an information evening for parents/carers about what Year 7 will look like and it was great to have people along to ask questions and see the learning spaces that their children will be in next year.
Year 7 is a big change for students and, as always, if any parents have any further questions about 2024, please contact the school to talk to one of our staff. Mr Ty Stewart will be the Year 7 AST in 2024, and Mrs Elle Fox will be the Grade Leader. Students were also handed an information pack at the end of Orientation Day to provide more information about what they can expect as they embark on their high school journey.
Even though we are nearing the end of another school year, it is vital that students continue attending every day and that they are participating in all learning experiences across all curriculum areas. We also have our end of year picnics coming up and students have had the expectations explained to them about what behaviours are needed in the coming weeks to be invited to these fun activities.
It is always tricky writing about challenges within our school. I am always careful not to communicate to a whole group something that only relates to a small number of people. This is not fair and often does not achieve anything other than harming our culture. However, sometimes by not mentioning challenges this can be interpreted as ignoring them or sweeping them under the rug.
Exeter High School values respectful mutual relationships. So, when we see some members in our community involve themselves in relationships that are not respectful, we struggle and find it hard to accept.
We don’t expect everybody to be friends, and this is okay. It is not okay to be mean, disrespectful, racial, sexually hurtful or unkind to another person. Sometimes I am challenged by some students within our community who think it is okay to be physical towards others, to make mean and hurtful statements, or share content on social media that is unkind. I encourage parents/guardians to have these challenging conversations with our young people. Check in on them. Are they being treated respectfully by their peers? Are they treating themselves respectfully? Are they treating others respectfully?
I often think of a famous quote by Maya Angelou who said, 'Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world but has not yet solved one’. I hope we can all encourage a community of kindness, care, and compassion - this does solve problems.
We are also looking forward to welcoming many new students in Year 11 in 2024 as we have approximately 20 students enrolled in our Rural Operations Year 11/12 course, which is tremendous to see and a testimony to the fantastic program that has been developed by Mr Fox and Mr Finnigan. I look forward to welcoming these students in 2024, along with several of our current Year 10 students who are continuing their educational pathway with us.

INTER-HIGH SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2023
On Friday 17th November, a small group of swimmers headed off to the Launceston Aquatic Centre to compete in the Division 1 Inter-high Swimming Carnival. Despite only having a small team, our students represented the school with pride, demonstrated impeccable behaviour and competed in a sportsmanlike manner.
Exeter had 16 podium finishes from the 40 events we participated in, but unfortunately too many gaps in the program meant that our true swimming potential was not reflected in the final results – sixth place.
A huge thank you to Hudson McKay, Neve O’Leary, Lily-Rose Horder and Addison Gore for “stepping up” to compete in additional events in a higher age group.
Well done to the following placegetters:
