PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
It’s hard to believe that Term 3 has already finished. I hope everyone is looking forward to a well-deserved holiday, ready for Term 4 which is always a jam packed 10 weeks. I had the pleasure of attending our Swimming Carnival on Monday and it was great to see our students giving their all in the events they participated in. Once again, the behaviour of our students was exemplary at the Launceston Aquatic Centre and a credit to our school. Thank you to our teachers for organising and running this highly successful event.
We had the JCP group present to our Year 7-9 cohorts last week as part of our termly MyEducation program. Will Smith is the presenter, and Will travels around the state visiting many schools as part of his role of mentoring students. His comment to Mr Stewart was that, “The Year 8 group that I just presented to was the best group I have seen in my time in this role.” His comment was based on both the behaviour of the year group, on the participation of students, and the questions they asked. This is so important as Will and his group will now spread the word about how amazing our students are in other schools and communities that they work in.
This past weekend saw several of our students represent Exeter High School in the Upper Secondary division of the Maths Relay – Northern Division. The 9/10 team, featuring Will Sweet, Princess Feely, Samantha Amos and Harrison Gibson, came in first place in their section. The two Year 7/8 teams finished outside of the placings, but everyone seemed to be having fun and showed great commitment to our school. Thank you to Mr Cooper who mentored and supported students at this event.
Year 10 students are currently planning what 2024 will look like for them, either in further education or in full time employment. Some students are realising that they need to work hard over their last 10 weeks here to maximise their grades as their results will often determine what courses/job opportunities are available to them. Our Year 10 team has been reinforcing this message throughout the year and I hope that students make the most of every learning opportunity they have in Term 4 to give them the best possible chance of being set up for a successful year in 2024.

MY EDUCATION DAY
My Education at Exeter High School supports students in making important life choices around planning for their future. It helps them to identify their personal interests, values, strengths, opportunities, and aspirations, and teaches them how to use this knowledge to make decisions about their future learning, work, and life opportunities. It has been shown that students who consider their interests and opportunities early on have a clearer picture about who they are and what they might like to do. Research has shown that students who are actively engaged in shaping their own life and career have:
- Improved relationships.
- Higher aspirations.
- An increase in confidence and self-esteem.
- Healthier lifestyle habits.
- A more positive outlook on life
A variety of activities were undertaken in each of the grades as part of the EHS My Education Day on Wednesday 20th September.
Year 7
The Term 3 Year 7 My Education Day started with students participating in a workshop on resilience presented by the JCP Empowering Youth program. During Lesson 2, students engaged in a variety of activities to identify how they learn best and brainstorm the qualities they want students at EHS to display as a part of our school community. These activities coincided with looking at the plans for the upcoming school redevelopment and the exciting opportunities this will present to our students in the future. To conclude the day, students viewed a film with the overarching message around the importance of perseverance and working with others. The Year 7 students had a fantastic day and were very engaged in the day’s activities.
Year 8
The Term 3 Year 8 My Education Day saw students commence by contributing their ideas towards an EHS school vision which will coincide with the school redevelopment. Students across the whole school worked through a series of activities to broaden their understanding of how they learn best and the future direction of Exeter High School. In Lesson 2, they experienced a presentation by JCP which focussed on resilience. In Lesson 3, students worked in groups to complete a series of challenges in an ‘Amazing Race’ to emphasise the importance of working together to achieve positive outcomes and to be successful. Students engaged very well with the content and activities, making for an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all.
Year 9
The Year 9 My Education Day involved three sessions focussing on school vision, leadership, and resilience. The first of our session was an opportunity for students to engage in the development process of the Exeter High School vision statement. This process coincides with the upcoming redevelopment of our school. During the second session of the day, we started to unpack leadership and its role within Exeter High School. Students participated in a workshop looking at leadership characteristics, teamwork, and communication. The final session of the day focussed on resilience and this content was delivered by JCP Empowering Youth and was presented by Will Smith.
Year 10
Year 10 students were involved in a myriad of activities designed to encourage participation, discussion, and exploration and extension of their ideas. This work will contribute to the development of Exeter High School’s vision statement.
Many activities were undertaken focussing on career pathways, student interests, identity, skills and qualifications while exploring the My Futures and Careerify websites.
Students focussed on Year 11 and 12 requirements to attain their TCE points, ATAR scores and the process involved in VET expression of interest applications. They used the TCE Course Planner to begin plotting their Year 11 and 12 pathways.
Students had one-on-one discussions with a representative from Newstead Colleges about subjects on offer at a college level and questions they might have in relation to these (Launceston College will conduct these sessions in Week 10).
The day finished with students filling in their Transition Plans, ready for college enrolment days in Week 2 and 3 of Term 4.
2023 EHS SWIMMING TRIALS – RESULTS
Exeter High School held its annual swimming trials at Launceston Aquatic Centre on Monday 25th September. Students from Years 7-10 participated in a range of 25m, 50m, 100m and relay events earning house points and competing for championship points and Inter-high selection. All students represented the school with pride and upheld our school values throughout the day. Special mention must go to the Year 7 boys whose participation was outstanding and contributed to almost half of Lenah’s total points for the day. Students enjoyed the opportunity to engage in some novelty events and a leisure swim following their efforts in the program of competitive events. We would like to say a big thank you to those parents who came along to support their children and soak up the casual atmosphere on the day.
The Division 1 Inter-high Swimming Carnival is scheduled for Friday 17th November and potential swimmers will be announced shortly.

RYDA REPORT
On Tuesday 26th September, the Year 10 cohort travelled to Symmons Plains to attend RYDA, the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program. There, students participated in six sessions, each addressing a different aspect of driving, from driver attitude to the safety features of modern cars. Two of the sessions featured moving stories about the severe and far-reaching consequences of car accidents, reminding students that having a license and driving on our roads is a serious responsibility. By attending RYDA, students earned five hours towards their 80 hours of L-plate driving.
